EDIT: Gail, you can ignore this post, because it's redundant. Linda and I seem to be logging on at about the same time, and her post is right on target.

Lactose is the primary sugar in milk and anyone who has enteritis (intestinal inflammation) is lactose-intolerant because they are unable to produce adequate amounts of lactase enzyme until the inflammation subsides. That doesn't cause the production of antibodies, however — it merely causes poor digestion, resulting in the lactose being fermented in the colon by bacteria, producing gas, bloating, cramps and diarrhea.

The main problem with dairy products is that most of us are sensitive to casein (the primary protein in all dairy products), causing the production of anti-casein antibodies by our immune system, and resulting in an autoimmune-type reaction similar to the reaction triggered by gluten.

Because of that, most of us react to all dairy products.

Linda,

See my edit in my previous post above. We are indeed in sync today. No need to apologize. The information you post is right on target, and it doesn't get any better than that.

Thanks.

We are supposed to go out for breakfast on Sunday. Help! I don't think there is one item I can eat! Any suggestions?

I don't think you've done Enterolab, correct? If not, you're not certain as to which of the big 4 (soy, gluten, eggs, dairy) you react to.....I know that our Eat N' Park has gluten free choices, but you wouldn't know about soy etc.

If I were you, I'd either eat before you go and just have coffee or tea, or take something with you to eat there, or not go at all.

I have done all three! I haven't been out to eat in over a year now. I do meet friends for tea, though.

Do what is comfortable for you and don't stress because it will get better with time.....I promise! :bigbighug:

I'm with Linda. I haven't gone out to eat in 2 years. I will order coffee or tea in a restaurant but that's about it. I have sat at tables and sipped on my drink while others eat or I have just not gone. It may not be the way you want things in a perfect world but for me not eating or not going is better than being sick. I know there are people here who do go out to eat. Generally they ask a lot of questions about the food and are very careful about what they order and still sometimes even that is not enough. It is really about how much risk you want to take for the "pleasure" of eating out. I am not willing to take much risk but others come to different conclusions.

Thanks for your input. I had pretty much thought the exact same thing. I will prob eat before hand and sip on some tea also. Good friends should support each other and if not, they aren't good friends.....

I went out to brunch with some friends a few months ago and all I could find to eat was a banana. I ordered hot water and a banana. They brought it out unpealed on a lovely white plate. We all had a good laugh. Nevertheless, I had the last laugh when we got our bills!!

Most definitely....

Keep in mind, as overwhelming as all the details about mc, are full on for those with it.
It is like a foreign language for others such as friends and family.

When you are not having the same meal as others, there may be questions...

One of my answers is something along the lines of; my immune system had some weird reprogram (like a virus getting into your computer), foods I could have before are now like a poison to my body. You would not knowingly ingest poison, likewise, I am not going to ingest food items that are like a poison to my body...

Real friends will empathise and go out of their way to help and support your decision....
The ones that keep questioning and asking you to explain with medical facts, I tend to distance myself from....

Most of all, stay calm and enjoy the outing....
