top good to be true?

Post by Leah »

Hi all. I just got back from a weekend trip to the Mendocino Coast. If you don't know where that is just know that is is in Northern Ca. and absolutely gorgeous! If you have seen the movie "Same time Next Year" ( Alan Alda) , that is Where it was filmed. We actually stayed at that same resort!

Anyway, knowing that I would be eating out and wine tasting ( The wine growing Anderson Valley is on the way), I made sure I took an H-2 antihistamine each day ( along with my H-1 daily dose). Yesterday, we stopped into a bakery after our 2 hour coastal walk to get Mike a coffee. I had carrot juice. Then I noticed that they had a few GF cookies. I was hungry, so I knowingly had a almond shortbread that was made with butter. Very daring. I haven't had dairy in 2 years. I WAS FINE! All through the weekend, I had restaurant food, wine, that cookie, chocolate, more wine… and I'm good!

All I can say is that I probably won't be adding dairy back in, but needless to say, I am excited that my gut seems to have healed enough to splurge sometimes and that there is hope for us all!

That's great that you could enjoy a weekend of fun and food without any ill effects.

Thanks for sharing the good news.

Hi Leah, I'm so happy you had a good time and I'm very happy that you are okay! It's so important to get beyond the day to day stuff and have a wonderful time.

You are expressing awareness that eating "old foods" might not work for you in the long run and we know that's often the case. I see people jumping back on the Board after long periods of remission saying that they added sensitive foods and were okay for a period of time then :newshocked: :shithitsthefan:

One of my biggest fears is that I will forget how sick I've been.

Now I have Alan Alda on my mind. He's one of my all time favorite actors and I've never seen "Same Time Next Year". I wrote it down. My new love is Jimmy Fallon. He's on too late for me but I watch clips from his show on my computer.

That's great Leah!! I personally do believe we can get to a level of healing where the system isn't always on hyper alert and a few dietary indiscrestions with our "secondary sensitivities" won't bother us. I hope to be able to eat butter someday too. Maybe being baked made the casein more tolerable? People with IgE allergies to milk and egg can sometimes tolerate baked goods containing the allergen.

What a wonderful time you had and no reactions. Just to get away once in a while and have a successful GF no reaction trip is the ultimate.

Love, Maggie

Hi Leah, I am learning something from the posts I'm reading. I hope that careful moderation is your reality and mine too
I'm in an earlier place. My excitement is getting off Entocort in a week

I've visited California but never N. California. The Redwood Forest is on my bucket list so maybe I'll get there and maybe I'll be drinking wine by then

Hey, just a side bar.....Jimmy Fallon went to the College of St. Rose in upstate NY where I did my undergrad work! Ha! The Rosebuds one claim to fame!!! Great memories of that little school back in the 60's....I then hit Northeastern for grad school and protested the war....Those were the days!!

Hi Leah,
I am so jealous. Both of your wonderful trip to northern Ca.and not having any difficulties. So very happy for you. Maybe one day we will all be able to have the success that you have had. Next year my husband and I are going on a two week cruise from Spain to Italy and I want to be able to eat the wonderful food on board! Hopefully I will get to.

Have a great day.

Thanks everyone :)
Dj, you should definitely try to watch the movie. It's kind of sappy, but has always been one of my favorites. And yes, if you ever come back, the Redwoods are a must. I am kind of spoiled because I live so close to them. Most times we camp, it's in the Redwoods. We never get sick of them though. There is something so quiet and soothing about them… and it spells great too :)

I have added a couple of products back into my diet. I am still not OK, and am beginning to conclude that I will never be. I still get exhausted, I get shooting pains and discomfort in my gut, and a lot of discomfort (no gurgling, or almost none), and and, bms, although formed, and NOT N. I have described them often enough.
However, those foods that I have added in (eggs in baked goods, and some almond flour - questions on that later, and a little chicken stock to make soups) seem to work to help me from getting terribly constipated. I still need Dr. Schultz now and again, but otherwise I am managing.
So far the status quo has been bearable. I am hoping it remains that way!

That's great news, Leah! It's a surprise when we eat something we know we shouldn't and anticipate a adverse reaction to it - and then don't have one! Glad to hear you're doing so well.

Wishing you continued healing.

That is great news Leah! sounds like a wonderful trip! Exciting about the dairy as wasn't it your biggest issue in the beginning? I eat a little dairy in things now and don't react either but will never sit down to a bowl of ice cream again...can't chance that. But just a little doesn't bother me at all. It's nice not to freak out over a little butter or milk in something isn't it? At one restaurant I get my spinach sauteed in butter and have no issues. And gosh it tastes so good! OKay...for every now and then! Hope it continues okay for you!

Good for you, Leah!

I think of you sometimes because I get gas in the morning, too! And, I am lucky my husband is always up before me, so I'm not embarrassed! I hope this condition runs its course.

So, you take both H1 and H2 antihistamines?
Linda :)
