Need help with my diet please!!

Post by tlras »

Well I knew this would happen. My MC is very much under control but my sugar addiction has caused another problem.

I just got my bloodwork results back and everything looks good except my Triglycerides went up to an all time high of 229. However, my A1C levels were better than ever and I'm far from being a pre-diabetic which I was worried about. I told the doctor my Trigs would be high as I have binged on sugar and corn chips since October. But I eat what I can tolerate. I'm now in the process of giving up the sodas and sweets and now thinking I need to give up some of my carbs...first one being my Rice Chex as I eat way too much of that processed junk. Plus I've been sedentary ever since I got this disease...just started working out last week...so that contributes to high Trigs as well.

So I'm thinking I'm going to have to brave some healthy foods. I was thinking bacon and a boiled egg in the morning. Uh..don't know how healthy that is but I tolerate eggs well. I found some Turkey bacon, nitrate and saturated fat free. But has a little bit of cholesterol in it. BTW, my bad cholesterol went down 23 points and is very normal...don't get it. Still have high good cholesterol. So thinking about giving up some of the unhealthy oils Polly mentioned..well going lighter on them anyway.

Leah! Leah! You mentioned baking your bacon in the oven...can't find the thread...what was the temp and for how long? Did you bake them all then freeze the rest? Please let me know.

If anyone has any other ideas on how to get my Trigs down other than the above mentioned please let me know. Also, changing my diet towards more Paleo really scares me as I know I will lose weight. I can't eat a small salad without getting heartburn so I guess that's out. So what do I do...just eat meat all day? I'm going to increase my veggies and see what happens.

Thanks for any advice you all may have. I'm doing so good with the exception of these dang Trigs!!

Hi Terri. If you are still drinking soda and eating sweets and you take them out of your diet, you may not have to cut ALL your carbs to lower your Trigs . I go back and fourth between having eggs for breakfast, and cereal. Moderation is sometimes all it takes :)

Yes, I bake my bacon, Just did a batch today. I fill a sheet pan with 6-7 strips at a time. I eat half at one meal and eat the other half by the next day ( nitrite free). 400 degrees for about 15 minutes. Check it at 12 to make sure it's the way you like it. I save the grease and refrigerate to use to cook other things.

Don't freak out. You are doing a GREAT job at managing your symptoms!

Hi Leah,

Thanks so much for getting back to me. I go to the doctor tomorrow...hate it that she pushes the meds when I know I can get my Trigs down with diet and exercise. Yes, I have given up sodas and my sugary snacks. I was thinking the same as you...that if I get rid of all that then I won't have to give up my GF bread and pasta but may go lighter on it. Need some carbs!! And I will alternate between the Chex and bacon/egg for breakfast...like you said "in moderation". I was eating like 3 bowls of Chex in the morning...crazy huh? So I think one serving of that a few times a week will be better rather than every day and not so much. I'm an emotional eater so that's been my issue since the holidays. I'm now doing Yoga and doing light cardio and strength training. On a mission! lol! And I learned a lot from you on here...always appreciate it! Thanks again!

Terri
another emotional eater here! (started very young when my mum dunked my dummy/pacifier in honey)

I can highly recommend the Keto type eating principle, of high protein and animal fat, minimal carbs.

Some MC Safe meal options (very affordable);

For breakfast i have been having chicken, with an egg and some avocado.
- the only carb is some sugar in my coffee, i am now using low GI coconut sugar

through the day I have protein shakes with Coconut water and small amount of rice milk. Flavoured with Coconut syrup (Low GI) and raw cocoa and stevia

- small amount of cooked veges, warmed in the pan with some eggs ( i sometimes have this for breaky)

while you adjust the brain and tastebuds to a low sugar eating plan, have a small serve of a peeled apple, or some watered down apple juice
if you minimise cereal/processed flours, and stick with small serves of 'ok carbs' such as veges or peeled fruit

each meal has big serve protein, small serve carbs...

Hope this helps!

Lesley
i did lose some weight doing Keto, the only problem for me was that due to a few influences at the time, one being moving, the second -stress about money/health, and another being high protein, my kidney function decreased.

I now do 'gabes modified keto' making sure that I have more protein than carb with most meals/snacks

it takes a bit of juggling to incorporate my MC eating plan, low histamine, and keto. (especially if you are working)
I have found it much easier to handle a low histamine, close to keto eating plan whilst i am not working.
The sugar cravings definately dropped when i had/have regular servings of protein.

I only get gas and bloating when i am having too many processed carbs/sugars.

I am trying to cut down/out sugar. I have cut down a lot, but not completely. Yet. I hope I can at some point soon. Right now I am reacting to cravings with a horrible headache, and so tired I feel I cold die of it.

You are not going to work at any time soon, right? So you can take care of you, and decrease the stress, right?

Kinda resting Lesley.
I have enough money to get by until mid April.

On Tuesday, I am having surgical removal of 1 moler, and fillings replaced on 3 others.

As soon as my medical records are transferred, I will be getting referral for new gastro specialist for upper and lower scopes and anal fissure investigation and repair.

The perfect plan would be to do all this before I start working...
Getting a good General Practice (GP) doctor was first part of the plan...

My diet is definitely ketogenic. I lost 85 pounds about a decade ago eating this way and I have kept the weight off by staying ketogenic. Using Fitday.com to track my food intake my diet comes out about 70-75% fat, 20-25& protein and 5% carbs, so high fat, moderate protein, low carb. There is something called the low carb flu that occurs when the body is switching from burning carbs as fuel to burning fat. Slowly switching doesn't help. Dr Eades has 2 articles on how to deal with it and manage to go ketogenic(low carb):

Hi Terri,

Good news about the a1c and LDL/HDL! It sounds like you know exactly what to do to lower the trigs., since the main cause of increased trigs is overdoing the starchy/sugary foods. And adding exercise should really help.

You may be an emotional eater, but don't forget, there is an actual addiction that occurs from eating carbs. I have always noticed how much longer I can go without getting hungry after eating a fat/protein breakfast than a carb-heavy one. I agree with Leah - making gradual changes may be the best way to go initially, although as Jean pointed out, when you get below a certain level of carbs, you may still experience that "flu".

Good luck! You can do it!

Thank you ladies!

Jean, thanks so much for the links..will check them out! Never heard of keto diet!

Gabes...thank you too and good luck with your molar extraction. I had 4 wisdom teeth extracted (2 were impacted) and they totally messed up my jaw...has never been the same.

Ladies. I CANNOT LOSE MORE THAN 7 POUNDS!! Doctor doesn't want me losing much weight so here's the plan she has for me.

Leah & Polly....my doctor pretty much said what you ladies said. I may just need to lower my sugar from the million grams per day (lol) to 15 grams per day. Even that will be hard for me!! Plus go low fat (don't see that happening) and no more than 150mg of cholesterol/day since I have heart disease in my family and high cholesterol history in family as well. But I keep hearing that it's the sugar, not the fat that's causing heart disease?! I'm sure there is cholesterol in all my lean meat..right? Haven't thought to ever check that! And one Eggsland egg is 175mg of cholesterol unless I just eat the egg whites like doctor says....don't really want to do that. So will see her back in 3 months for another workup on cholesterol and see how it's going with my 15 grams of sugar a day and eating more eggs. As for carbs, she says to cut down a tiny bit maybe with the chips but wants to do gradual eliminations and won't need to go low carb...everything in moderation. So once I remove most sugar and cut down on chips hopefully my levels will be good again. Will be interesting to see!

She says absolutely no meds...yay! My good cholesterol is too high and LDL is at 112 so no worries there. So I'm eating something right.

Gabes...thank you for the meal suggestions...I do think I'd feel better if I gave up my 3 bowls of Chex every morning (pitiful) and have a protein-filled breakfast.

Polly...so true...it's definitely an addiction..I'm under no stress and still want that sugar but this week has been better!

Lesley...2 weeks ago when I started weening down from my million grams of sugar, I did get headaches, achiness all over and just wanted to go to bed. Felt like the flu to me and I'm not even going sugar free. But it went away for now. Good luck to you!

thanks again,

Terri

Terri,

The old claim that eating cholesterol raises blood cholesterol levels is nothing but a myth perpetuated by doctors and other misinformed "health experts" who made inappropriate assumptions many years ago, and continue to fail to update their knowledge. That's no more true than the mistaken claim that all saturated fats raises our cholesterol level. It's not that simple.

Tex...thanks so much for the links! I had heard this before...will see how it goes with me as there is no way I can stay under 150mg of cholesterol when eating all the meat I do and now adding more eggs. It's just not going to happen. I can't give up much more or I'd go crazy...so bye bye to sugar and some processed foods for now. Will not worry about my cholesterol intake from foods...just would go mad! Thanks so much! Will be interesting to see what my levels will be like in 3 months.

I was going to say the same thing as Tex. I'll be curious to see what your numbers do also :)
