I hope they don't go the wrong way, because if that should happen, some of us might have to leave the country.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Terri,

Just jumping in to echo what the others have said about cholesterol. I think at least 2/3rds of anyone's cholesterol is made by their body - it's the minority that comes from what we eat. And there are other factors involved. For example, having a high HDL is GOOD and is thought to be protective, even in the case of an elevated cholesterol. One way to increase HDL is exercise. I will also be interested to see your numbers.

Ya know...since most of us if not all eat a lot of meat, it would be interesting to know if anyone has had elevated cholesterol after starting this type of diet. And for those who tolerate eggs and eat them often, have any issues with cholesterol. Just curious.

Tex...that is too funny!

Polly...good to know. My HDL is at 70.

I have a good friend that was 40 lbs over weight and had high cholesterol and Triglycerides and went on the Paleo diet. No grain, dairy, or sugar. He at eggs and bacon every breakfast and lost the 40 lbs and all his #s came down to normal. He now eats Paleo during the week and cheats some on the weekend. He doesn't have MC and can get away with cheating. It's not about the fat, it's about the sugar! Sugar is very addicting as well as grain which turns to sugar when we eat it. It's hard to accept but that's the way it is. I struggled for years accepting it but its been well over a year since grain or sugar crossed my lips as well as dairy and just about everything else but turkey and squash. I am better but not well.

Hi Pat,

Congrats on being grain/sugar free for so long. That's amazing! Very hard to do. Hope you continue getting better and better.

As for your friend, that was news I wanted to hear!! When you've gone all your life hearing that eggs and meat due to cholesterol content/saturated fat are so bad for ya..it's nice to hear stories like this. I'm still a little scared to debunk these myths about eggs and meat (totally defying my doctor's orders) but hoping I can as this is the only way I can really eat these days. More protein! I have added more meat to my diet in the last year since my last bloodwork and my LDL went down 20 pts...so I'm leaning towards believing that these are true myths after all!

Thanks for sharing!

I'm trying to talk my sister-in-law into this way of thinking, but she just can't wrap her head around the fact that eating saturated fats don't raise her cholesterol. My husbands family all produce too much cholesterol and all of them are on Statins ( none are over weight).
My numbers have always been good. Genetics :)

Leah...I have a friend who is the same way and is somewhat freaking over this information I just gave her. She can't wrap her head around it either as her Dad had a polyp many years ago and went on a raw diet..gave up all meat..and so she thinks meat is poison. However, she is a very supportive friend to me in my situation. She has food intolerances and I keep telling her to go get checked out but she doesn't have insurance yet. It's just so nice to meet someone (only met her last May) who has food issues like me. Our two families are planning a trip to South Padre Island in the summer and neither one of us will be able to eat out...too scared...but this will be my first trip since my diagnosis. Cooking all my meals in our condo. A little nervous but once I get there I'll be okay. Only a 6-hr drive. One day I hope to go back to Destin...which is a 10-hr drive.

My Mom, Dad have high cholesterol so that's why I worry so much about it. My brother has high Trigs in the 300's. Parents are both on statins but brother refuses them. Both my Dad and my brother seem to have more of a Trig issue than a total cholesterol issue. My parents guilty pleasure has been the sweets (where I got it from ) and my brother seems to binge on pasta and meat. So I really don't know if my family produces too much cholesterol or not. I just know that both my parents are on a very low dosage of statin so it must not be too bad. They are both very thin and always have been. Brother not so much..lol! Needs to exercise.

I've decided to do one egg a day for four days as I only eat 2 scrambled eggs a week and don't know how my body will tolerate a boiled egg a day...shouldn't be a problem. Then will add the turkey bacon next week..almost forgot I needed to add one food in at a time. I'm also allowed half a banana too!

BTW...glad your numbers are good...we don't need more to worry about right? It's rough...I finally get my diet down and now have to change it again..but hoping it's for the better.

This whole cholesterol thing is a mystery to me.

My husband is a skinny runner, with a total cholesterol in the 240 range, but HDL of 90 and LDL in the 120s. His doctor has never pushed statins, just lets him do his diet thing, which is fine. He chooses to eat egg substitute most of the time, but plenty of meat and veggies. He eats lots of oatmeal for breakfast. What he doesn't eat is much fruit, to my consternation. He does like candy. His side of the family is generally smaller boned/leaner than mine, and they all have higher cholesterol than my side of the family does.

My total cholesterol numbers are in the 190s, but also high HDL and low LDL, even after eating an extremely high protein/higher fat diet with lots of meat, eggs, nuts since going GF/DF/SF 3 years ago. After my LC DX, I decided that meats/good fats had to not be my enemies, because otherwise I was hungry all the time. I am heavier in lbs. than he is, and, consistent with others in my family, have a bigger build, but am fit; I exercise most days, either in (yoga and core strength/weight) classes, or walking outdoors, weather permitting (this winter in New England is killing me). My doctor also has never mentioned statins for me, and I would alter my diet and exercise, as my husband did, rather than take them.

There are a lot of book out there on this topic. Here's one of them:

http://www.amazon.com/The-Great-Cholest ... 1844546101

I stopped worrying a long time ago about cholesterol. I once took Lipitor and it caused debilitating joint pain that made it hard to get out of bed or walk down a flight of stairs. Removing the Lipitor removed the pain. Now I don't bother to get my cholesterol checked since no matter what the numbers might be I won't change anything. I eat a low carb paleo diet and I refuse to ever take a statin again. We can choose what we worry about. I choose not to worry about cholesterol, especially since there is so much evidence that the current medical advice is wrong.

Jean...thanks for the link! I may have to order that book! I don't normally worry over my cholesterol numbers anymore since my HLD is so high. Just gotta get my Trigs down...that's a whole other issue. But can do easily with exercise and staying on a low sugar, lower carb diet. Oh, yes, I'm sure I'd have some nasty side effect from those statins...one reason why I'll probably never get on one.

Suze...wow..that's the highest HDL I've ever heard of. Must be all that oatmeal he eats...I haven't tested GF oatmeal yet. And good to hear your numbers are so good with all the meat/fats/eggs you eat. I just went out and bought my usual meat...checking the cholesterol for the first time....good grief, there is cholesterol in all of it...and doctor wants me to stay under 150 mg/day...that's impossible...not with our diet!! I'm easily going to go around or over 300mg/day and like Jean says, I'm just not going to worry about it for now. Luckily my doctor is pretty understanding about my MC diet and luckily doesn't push statins...doesn't need to yet anyway. Glad you can work out Suze...I just started getting my energy back when I upped my B-12 so I'm back at it!! Another lifestyle change.

BTW...my total cholesterol is always around 220's but doc says that's mostly because my HDL is so high. I was scared seeing those numbers at first...doctors are so quick to say "Your cholesterol is over 200...that's high!". But then they turn around and say "oh but your HDL is high so that total is okay." Whatever!

So this is the week I change up my diet somewhat...sure miss my sugar...hard trying to keep it under 24mg/day...doctor says 15mg/day is preferable but that's if you are a diabetic and I'm not. So gonna see what happens for 3 months and tweek from there.
