Sorry for the TMI but Yeast Infection--first in 20 years!!!

Post by brookevale »

Hi,

Again, sorry for the TMI, but I started a yeast infection four days ago and I have not had one in 20 years! WTH??? I feel like my body is revolting against me. I did Monistat the 3 day treatment and am no better. I made an appointment with my OB/GYN the day after my colonoscopy on Friday. Has anyone had this happen to them in association with MC? I was on antibiotics a month ago for SIBO. But, I've been on many rounds of antibiotics in the past few years and never got a yeast infection.

Thanks,
Brooke
Strongly believe I have a form of MC that began to flare December 27, 2013.

Hi Brooke,

UTIs are not exactly a common problem with MC, but the disease does seem to slightly increase the odds of developing one. Have you ever heard of D-mannose? You might find some benefits in the thread at the following link, and the website at the next link:

I don't think I have a UTI, but rather a yeast infection. I wonder if other women with MC have all of a sudden developed these after never or rarely having them before MC or an MC flare. My two month flare was very bad as far as D and dehydration so I wonder if that contributed. More will be revealed at my appointment on Friday. Very uncomfortable and strange.

*Just edited this. I now think I have both a yeast infection AND UTI if that's possible. I am so sick of being sick!

HI Brooke,
I hope others will chime in but looking back I can't say that I've had an increase in either- yeast infections or UTIs. You've been on a lot of antibiotics (it sounds like) and that might still be the culprit. Or it could be a matter of everything is inflamed right now for you.

If you do think you have a UTI, consider D-Mannose. People here have had a lot of success with it. A co-worker of mine with chronic UTIs tried it and it worked for her so she bought some for her daughter and granddaughter. If you have to go on another antibiotic you might consider using the 'search' option above and see if there is one antibiotic that is tolerated by those of us with MC than others. Keep working on staying hydrated. Easier said than done I know.

take care,
Carol

Hi Brooke!

I never had a yeast infection until I had to take a strong round of antibiotics for pre-pneumonia a few years ago. Then, I got the worst yeast infection of my life.....and it kept reoccurring! :yikes:

I tried all the meds from my ob-gyn, and they were only a temporary fix. I finally had to cut way down on sugar/carbs/starches, and I did this: http://drcarlywendler.com/2012/02/21/yo ... lic-where/
I only used a few slices of the raw garlic, but that in combination with diet changes really worked. Hope that's not TMI for anyone!

I know how miserable you feel right now! Here are some more ideas: http://altmedicine.about.com/od/healthc ... ection.htm

Good luck...sometimes when it rains, it pours, and that seems to be applicable to you right now. Everyone is here for you.

Yeast infections can be triggered by major diet change and/or stress.
Based on what you have shared, I think it is both.

There will be a few bumps along this journey, as the chemical structure of your gut changes. Hang in there, the hard work and getting through these bumps will be worth it.

Can't say that either got worse with MC, but I have had my share of yeast infections in the past. I have't taken an antibiotic is a very long time, but when I do, i make sure I also get a script for Fluconazole ( it's a one time anti fungal).

If you think you might also have an UTI, then what you think is yeast might be a bacterial infection ( different). If left untreated, the bacteria can travel up the urethra and grow in the bladder or urinary tract.

The doc will be able to tell very easily.

Hi Brooke,

When my MC was at its worst and I was changing my diet, I had a string of yeast infections followed by a string of UTIs. These were new to me, too. I believe that discovering my sensitivities/allowing my gut to heal and D-Mannose made the difference. Both were miserable and on-going, and I had to treat them. It's now been months without one or the other. Hang in there; it all gets better in time.

I hope you can find some relief soon.

Are you sure it's yeast? In Nov. of 2012, my pcp said I had a yeast infection (never sent bio to lab, just checked in office). Treated me with presc. Got worse. Mine was burning so not typical yeast. Went back, more presc. and otc by the boxes full. Got worse! Then she thought maybe bacterial. I finally went to a lady doc who sent bio to the lab. I had neither. She said she thought it was autoimmune related, prescribed premarin and said to take lots of antihistamines. When I flare or try to reduce my endocort, it comes back. All that to say, if meds aren't helping, ask your doc to look into other causes. As long as I'm consistent with the premarin, I do pretty good. (I also use unscented soaps and laundry detergent.)

I hope you find relief soon. I'm having a similar issue. My GYN's standard treatment is Monostat7 first followed by an office visit if needed. At my appointment he said I had a bacteria infection and gave me a prescription for clindamycin. After two rounds of that treatment, I'm better but not cured. I plan to call his nurse today to see what the next step is.

I'm also battling sinus/allergy issues so may have to take an antibiotic for that also. None of my OTC and natural remedies seem to be working. I started oil pulling yesterday, but it is too soon to see if that will help with the sinus issues.

Thanks everyone. I see my gynecologist on Friday. I think I may have unraveled the mystery--not 100% sure but a possibility. My GI doc started me on Bentyl (dicyclomine) a few weeks ago. I've been searching online and a side effect is urinary retention and dry membranes. I think I got so dried out it created this mess. And, it has been more difficult to urinate. I am sure doctors would say that wouldn't cause that, but that's what they say about every side effect I've ever had and my gut intuition was right. So, I'll try going w/o the med to see if it helps. I certainly don't want antibiotics or antifungals if I don't have to be on them. They really mess with my gut and cause severe flares. I will let you all know how I make out. Today is colonoscopy prep  for tomorrow's procedure. Uggg.

Hey Brenda. Just wanted to add my experience. Before MC ( about 13 years ago now), I started having issues. I went from one doctor to another. Each one not knowing what to do with me. I was treated for EVERYTHING, but yeast was never found, but my sample always had major white blood cells under the microscope… and some bacteria. I also got better on Clindamycin, but like you, it always came back. Major discharge ( sorry TMI), itch and/or burning.

Kaiser finally sent me to their "specialist". She came to the conclusion that I have an autoimmune thing called Disquamative, Inflammatory Vaginitis ( DIV). No cure. I am on a maintenance once a week dose of Clindamycin and a hydrocortisone suppository. plus a daily OTC antihistamine ( with that one, she was ahead of her time).

Now that I look back, it all makes more sense because I am IgA deficient ( which makes me prone to autoimmune stuff). MC is autoimmune and the inflammation puts a strain on our system…. and more inflammation can happen in a different part of our bodies if it's not addressed.

Just thought this info might help you. I hope you don't have it though

Thanks for the information, Leah. I was able to get in to see my gyn this afternoon. He didn't see any bacteria, but he did see indication of thinning due to decreased hormones as well as irritation probably because I have a leaky bladder. He prescribed me a hormone cream to use for two months. Also he told me to use A&D ointment or diaper rash cream during the day to minimize the irritation. I don't know if I'm IgA deficient or not. The only thing that will help the leaky bladder is losing more weight. I had a bladder suspension in '97.

Right now antihistamines or decongestants aren't doing their job for me. I spent most of my morning in my PCP office. He did confirm I don't have strep throat but nothing is relieving that pain and irritation. I get a little relief by drinking hot liquid but the pain never goes away. PCP did give me Nasonex but that can irritate my nostrils almost as bad as my throat feels like right now. I'm going to try warm towels on my face tonight to see if that can help the pressure.
