AUSSIE JINGLE BELLS

Post by Liz »

Thought you may like to see our version of Jingle Bells

AUSSIE JINGLE BELLS

Dashing through the bush in a rusty Holden ute,
Kicking up the dust, Esky in the boot.
Kelpie by my side, Singing Christmas songs.
It's summertime and I am in my singlet, shorts and thongs,

CHORUS
Oh,Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way,
Christmas in Australia on a scorching summer's day, Oh!
Jingle bells, jingle bells, Christmas time is beaut,
Oh what fun it is to ride in a rusty Holden ute.

Engine' s getting hot, we dodge the kangaroos,
The swaggie climbs aboard, he is welcome too,
All the family is there, sitting by the pool,
Christmas day in the Aussie way, by the bar - b - que, Oh!

CHORUS!

Come the afternoon, grandpa has a doze,
The kids and Uncle Bruce, are swimming in their clothes,
The time comes round to go, we take a family snap,
And pack the car and all shoot - through
Before the washing up, Oh!

CHORUS!

That is so cute Liz. Just a few questions:
What is a rusty Holden ute? an esky? a kelpie? a swaggie?

I did get the part about everyone taking off before the dishes were done!

Merry Christmas!

Hi Hazel

A Holden Ute is something of an Aussie icon. It is a utility vehicle with seating in the front & a back section..... Oh well, here is a pic of a fairly new one. We had one back in the sixties & they have not changed a great deal.

Image

An esky is a portable ice box. People often take them on picnics

A Kelpie is a dog, quite often a working dog used to round up sheep.

A swaggie is another Aussie icon & the term goes back many years when men without a job went on the road looking for work. They often did small jobs in return for food.

Carried his swag which was his bedroll.

Thanks for the definitions and pictures! I think a Holden is the equivalent of a Chevrolet in the US. Also, I remember now that a swagman jumped into or out of a bilabong so swaggie must be a swagman that you're fond of.

Hope the crab pot was full.
