Tested Negative for MC Now What--Doesn't Make Sense

Post by brookevale »

Hi,

I am at a loss. I had a colonoscopy a week and a half ago. The doctor took biopsies from the terminal ileum and removed a few minor polyps. Doctor's office called today and said everything looked unremarkable and ok. It doesn't make sense. I have had every symptom of MC. Now what? I am sticking to the MC diet which was helping but over the past few weeks I've had a severe yeast infection and diflucan made me nauseous so I lost weight again. I am down to 112 lbs from 136 lbs in December. I am so depressed.

I would hope that your doctor also took biopsy samples from each section of the colon. If he didn't, he probably missed MC, because he wasn't looking for it (or he doesn't know how to look for it). We've heard that line before, from our GI docs, and it's not always an accurate reflection of what the pathologist actually found.

If I were in your situation, I would request a copy pf the pathology report. Too often the information in the pathology report does not match what some GI docs tell their patients. What you need is the actual pathology report, not the GI doc's interpretation of the pathology report. The report will be written in doctorspeak, but that's not a problem — we savy doctorspeak around here.

I will work on getting that pathology report. All my symptoms have pointed to MC: sudden onset diarrhea that won't let up (never had diarrhea issues in my life), stomach rumbling, full feeling, sudden food intolerances, etc. This all started after heavy doses of antibiotics and NSAIDs. Guess all I can do for now is keep sticking to the gluten free, sugar free, dairy free, soy free, basically carb free diet and pray I gain some weight and stop losing it.

So frustrating, isn't it Brooke? Even if you don't have an actual MC dx, you can treat yourself as if you do. The only downside is if you wanted to go on prescription drugs to help you with your symptoms, you probably couldn't.

It's too bad that you had a setback with the yeast and Diflucan, but you will see as time goes on, that this is not a straight line to recovery. There will be bumps along the way. How tall are you ? 112 is very light, but hopefully, you will gain some back as you get better. I was down to about 110 when I was at my worst ( I'm 5'4), but am back up to 117. It's where I like to be. Next time you have a yeast infection, you might want to stick to suppositories and creams.

I hope you start feeling better soon. Remember to watch the sugars and RAW fruits and veggies too.

Brooke,

I don't have a diagnosis. I decided to skip the colonoscopy and go straight to the diet. Luckily for me the dietary changes I made based on Enterolab testing and the information about histamine I found on the forum did the trick. I already knew that fiber made things worse. I don't use medication but there are people on the forum who have got around that problem by ordering medication from India where no prescription is necessary. We expect our doctors to give us the answers (or at least I used to) but in truth there is a lot that doctors don't know and dietary change is completely within your control, doctor's blessing or not.

Hope things start turning around for you soon.

Thanks, Leah and JFR. I can't believe I still have this horrible internal itching and burning. My gyn is at a loss. I am seeing my naturopath on Thursday so maybe she'll have suggestions for eradicating this awful yeast. I am also going to ask her about low dose naltrexone as I know the doctor she is in practice with prescribes and believes in it for calming the immune system. I think that is why I am having such a hard time with the yeast symptoms. My body is in full-on attack mode--attacking itself that is.

I could probably get Enterocort from my primary but am worried about side effects. My diet is extreme right now--still in elimination phase. By the way, I am 5'4" and was 136 lbs two and a half months ago, so losing 24 lbs this quickly is frightening. I did notice that I need to stop using coconut oil in cooking as it was making diarrhea worse. I'm trying to squeeze fats in through oils, but need to be careful.

What do any of you recommend as far as basic foods to gain weight? I am eating meats, veggies, some nuts.

Are you sure that you can't eat either rice or potatoes? I think Rice is what helped me with weight, but I know some of us can't eat it. I am getting hungry. I think some pork and rice is on the menu today :) Nitrite free bacon is pretty high is calories.

Sorry you are still having yeast issues. Have you been on Diflucan?

OOOOOPs. I just realized that you already did the Diflucan with bad results. Sorry. What about Nystatin? I remember when I was struggling with yeast ( before Diflucan was even on the market) and nystatin always worked better for me then Monistat… and is very safe. It's been around a long time.

Brooke,

Regarding the itching — are you taking any antihistamines? If not, Benedryl at bedtime, and a non-drowsy antihistamine such as Allegra, Zyrtec, or Claritin Redi-Tabs in the morning, might be very beneficial for suppressing the itching. Antihistamines won't cure the problem, but they can certainly help to suppress the itching.

Leah,

I asked about Nystatin and the nurse practitioner said it only comes in liquid and is a pain in the ass to take. I found the pill form online so I don't know what she's talking about. I also read somewhere that there is a version you can insert vaginally. I'm at a loss. So depressed.

Tex,

I've been taking atarax, an antihistamine and benadryl. It hasn't helped. I wonder if the extreme diarrhea and dehydration in addition to mega antibiotics brought this on and it is just a SUPER infection at this point. At your suggestion I formally requested the pathology report from my GI. Can't wait to see what it says and post it here.

Hi Pat and Zizzle, yep I try to take probiotics but they don't always agree with me. Depending on the day, I feel like they do more harm than good. I can't do yogurt or kefir or anything fermented as I've read the yeast love that stuff as much as sugar (that and milk products produce sugar in our bodies). No c diff (had that a year and a half ago and know exactly what that smells and looks like). I've had two stool tests both normal. My tests are always normal, well, except for the yeast culture.

How did you get rid of the C.diff? It's my understanding you can never erradicate it completely, so any antibiotic regimen might allow it to regrow and cause symptoms, no?

I would guess that the antibiotics probably gave you this yeast problem. When I used Nystatin, I used the suppositories. I don't know what that woman is talking about.
