Dried mushroom: Live and learn
It's been a while since I have had D. Things aren't perfect but I tend more towards C than D now and I believe that my problems are mostly motility issues, perhaps due to what I was told was pelvic floor dysfunction, rather than food sensitivities, although it's impossible to know for sure. When I joined this forum 2 years ago I was clearly having histamine related problems and I removed all high histamine foods from my diet. I also started taking an antihistamine (Allegra). Slowly I have been able to add a lot of those foods back so I stopped thinking very much about them. Yesterday I decided to try adding some shitake mushrooms to my homemade turkey broth. I have the turkey broth all the time without problem. I soaked the mushrooms for a few hours and then added them to the broth along with some bok choy, which I also eat without problem. Within 30 minutes of having the soup I was in the bathroom with D for the first time in a long while. I clearly had a major brain lapse when I so cavalierly added the mushrooms, not just mushrooms but dry mushroom that I had to soak. If I had been thinking I would have realized that they were going to be a high histamine food. Oh well, live and learn.

Oh, Jean,
What a bummer! But the good news is that you have no question at all about "who" the offender is. What high histamine foods have you been able to add back in? Do you think the mushroom problem was related to an unusually high amount of histamine that exceeded the level that you can now tolerate? Are you still taking the Allegra?
I hope the D is short-lived!
Love,
Polly

Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused.

I have been eating small quantities of sauerkraut or other fermented veggies (no more than 1/4 cup) plus I can eat spinach without problem and can eat a square of dark chocolate too. Mushrooms are a moderately high histamine food and I imagine the drying and then soaking only upped the histamine. It probably just put me over the top. I am taking Allegra. I had stopped it for a while but decided to start it again since I have pollen type allergies and I have been told that spring will eventually come, although it is hard to believe that right now. I decided to take some Immodium to stop the D and it seems to have worked.

It depends on how you react to histamines. I take OTC antihistamines and can eat some mushrooms, but the other afternoon, I heated up some leftover sautéed ones and reacted… a little. I haven't tried dried mushrooms and now that I have read Jean's experience, I don't think I will ( sorry to hear your story. Hope it is short lived) !

Hi Jean,
I have had many a major brain lapse myself. Lol! At first I read your post avidly hoping that your experiment with soaking the dried mushrooms would prove a success but something in me said this is going to end badly. I often have pondered as to what would be a safe mushroom substitute on a pizza but mushrooms seem to have no equal. I usually chop up soft hearts of artichoke for my pizzas. Hopefully, once you strain the mushrooms from your turkey broth some of mushroom flavor will remain.
