Nuts and nut butters irritate MC and cause D?

Post by brookevale »

I don't know if I'm sensitive to nuts but do know I can't tolerate peanut butter. I have dangerously low weight so I've been eating macadamia and Brazil nuts and almond butter. Other than that I am eating only meat, veggies, eggs, and adding some olive oil to foods. I looked at my 3 month long food diary and a week where I ran out of almond butter my D wasn't as bad. Do nuts damage/irritate the intestinal lining and cause worse D?

Thanks!
Brooke

Hi Brooke,

It seems that while most of us can tolerate most nuts, quite a few of us can't tolerate certain nuts. Some of us can tolerate nut butters, even though we can't tolerate the whole nuts (chewed up, of course). A few of us (including me) seem to have problems with all nuts, and all nut butters, but this level of intolerance is uncommon. The interesting part is that those of us who cannot tolerate any nuts, nor any nut butters, are able to tolerate almond milk just fine.

Apparently (since nuts do contain a fair amount of fiber) they are abrasive enough that some of us cannot tolerate them because of the fiber content. Nut butters are easier to digest, but the fiber is still there, so even though it is in a form that is more easily digested, it apparently may still be too much for some of us.

Here's some more information on fiber. Dr. Eades' blog sums up the problem quite well, by debunking the myth that a high fiber diet is "healthy".

Apparently Dr. Eades Agrees With Me About Fiber

Here's a link to the original article about this research "discovery" that I mentioned in my post at the link above. And here's a summary of that article:
If you ever wondered just how a high-fiber diet helps keep you, well, "regular," scientists may have the answer. Their results suggest that as these bulky foods make their way down the gastrointestinal tract, they run into cells, tearing them and freeing lubricating mucus within.
Does tearing cells in the walls of our intestines sound like something that would be beneficial to anyone, let alone someone whose intestines are hyperinflamed to begin with?

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Hi Brooke,
I had to give up peanut butter as I too found that I couldn't tolerate it. I LOVE almonds, almond butter and almond milk and tolerate all 3. A great source of good fats too!

Hi Brooke. I also had to give up peanut butter because it's actually not a nut, it's a legume ( in the soy family). As for other nuts, when I was healing, I could eat cashews and almond butter. We are all different though. Now, I can also chomp happily on almonds, but still react to pistachios. Who knows why. Listen to your body. If you are worse eating them, then don't ( at least for now).

Do you eat avocados? They are easy to digest and high in fat…. not to mention, delicious.

I will try avocados again. I tried them before and couldn't tolerate. There is little I can eat at this point. I hate being so thin and continuing to lose weight. It is awful and scary. I wish they found the MC and I could at least try the budesonide.

Mc or not, Budesonide wont necessarily help you gain weight.

yes, it will mask/ease the symptoms while you figure out the MC/IBD/IBS Management plan.
but it does not heal the inflammation which is the root cause of the MC reactions.

Deep breathes, patience and minimal stress, bland low inflammation eating plan is your best healing option. Once the gut heals, and your digestion works effectively, weight gain will occur, albeit it wont be instant, it may be gradual and take a while.
Budesonide wont make any of that happen any quicker.
