Hi nerdhume!

HAHAHAHAHA. The title of your post tickled me! What came to mind were the awful smells that we emit when in public restrooms or when, heaven forbid, we have had a little public accident. Very good clues indeed that IBD might be lurking nearby!

An interesting article - especially the ability to diagnose the difference between IBD and IBS. That could save the many MCers who are misdiagnosed with IBS a lot of time and suffering.

Thanks for sharing.

I know that when I was eating wheat I had the smelliest gas and BMs. Not normal poop smell or gas smell. It was unreal!!!! And I had the hardest time going GF. I think it was mental??? An addiction??? I have been off of it for over a year and 3 months and no more weird smell. That went away almost immediately. I don't crave it anymore either. Yay!

This does not surprise me at all. When I was flaring, it always had the same chescteristic odor and color, regardless of what I ate.

The University of the West of England study, published in the Journal of Breath Research, used a testing system they built combining a gas chromatograph and a metal oxide sensor to recognise patterns specific to known diseases.
They are using the wrong test equipment — they could probably boost their accuracy to 95 % or better, if they would simply ditch the gas chromatograph and metal oxide sensor, and replace them with a properly-trained dog. Seriously.

Canine noses can detect cancer, impending epileptic seizures, and all sorts of other difficult-to-detect health issues. Diagnosing IBDs should be a piece of cake for a trained dog.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

That's exactly what I was thinking Tex! This would be a great job for trained dogs, and it would save our healthcare system lots of money!! We should start a business... Canine IBD Diagnostics, Inc.

With so many people out of work, this job should be offered to human beings first. There aren't many dogs on unemployment, are there? "Help Wanted - Poop Sniffer, a new and exciting field for those with a discerning nose".

Polly, your response made me smile. Am I the only one wanting to stick around and encourage someone when I hear what sounds like colitis symptoms in public bathrooms?

And the title got me as well! I was like, um, that's one weird or dedicated doctor. Or both. Now to read the article. :)

My question, why go through all this when they do a fecal calprotectin (sp) test?
