Prayer request for Sis

Post by Lucy »

Hi all,

Mentioned in another thread that both Sis and I'd had our bone densities and mammograms at the radiology place today.
Thought I'd put this in a separate thread.

Anyway, my sis had to have a needle biopsy a while back which turned out to be benign, and matter of fact. the needle must've removed that whole thing as it didn't appear on these films. Unfortunately, she now has several suspicious calcified areas for cancer, so will have to go see a breast doc, and when questioned directly, radiology lady seemed to think this time it'd be an "open biopsy."

She's very experienced, but we'll see what the breast doc will want to try first. Perhaps it would be better to just go ahead and do the "open," but then that means surgery.

Also, sometimes, you have to sign for them to go ahead with a more extensive surgery if it indeed looks like something, so you never know what you'll wake up with, or should I say without? Wow, this is NOT such good news for Christmas, particularly since I think it's only been since about last May that Sis had a repeat ultrasound due to her history.
I'm sure glad that we transferred to THIS lady as my sis has always said that she was amazing at finding serious things with her ultrasound expertise. She is very nice, very intelligent, and one can tell she really cares about her patients -- nice to have a more "hands on" radiologist, and it's easy to talk to her as well.

Anyway, I'm still feeling optimistic, just hope that Sis isn't holding back on the degree of concern the radiologist expressed to her privately.

If you pray, I'd appreciate your remembering my sister.

Wow, don't you hate it when you hear noises like someone on your back porch! Hope it's just a cat or the wind or something! Creepy!

Thanks!
Yours, Luce

Lucy,

Definately thinking of your sis. An open biopsy, while obviously more invasive than a needle, doesn't have too mean too serious a surgery for sure. My mom had one, and I think it was all done with a local anesthetic. I suppose it depends on how deep the calcifications are. My Mom's did turn out to be cancer, but it was treated successfully by surgery and she has not had a recurrance in, I think, now 9 years.

I will be thinking of you. I hope its just more benign stuff. And very glad she is keeping such a careful eye on it. That is the key.

Thank you all!

Just thought I'd give you an update. Today, the radiologist called Sis at work, and was more detailed in that she said that the configuration of these calcifications looked to her as though it could be a certain kind of in situ PRE-carcinoma.

Unfortunately, yesterday, she seemed to insinuate to nt sister that it was a little deep, and my sister doesn't have lots of fat up there anyway, so it's not because of that.

She gave her a very long list of oncology/breast/surgeon's with whom she'd familiar, and my sister knows quite a few of them already. She's going to also see what her former classmate and current regular gyn thinks about who would be good to see.
I recommended that she get in to see the first acceptible, experienced one that would see her, and use them as a "second opinion" if she'd rather have someone else do the biopsy. We know some real good breast oncologist/surgeon's who've seen our family members already. Only have one paternal aunt that has had known breast cancer, and she was in her 80's when she had the mastectomy, and lived up into her 90's, dying of heart failure after lots more productive years post mastectomy. I'm not sure how hereditary the cancer tends to be when it's found at advanced ages like that? Who knows?

In a way, think I'm still telling myself that this just LOOKS like a pre-cancerous thing, and that when they get in there, they'll decide the configuration is just a coincidence, and nothing more than numerous calcifications just like the totally benign, harmless one that was removed with the needle biopsy. Anyway, that's what I'm hoping for, but if it has to be cancer or pre-cancer, sure hope that it's well contained enough that the surgeon will be able to remove it all safely. This is of concern since my sister seemed to think it was fairly deep.

I'm sure this is also stressful for my bil, and my sister also is probably worried about us if she is sick or has to be out for a while recoup'g.

Anyway, thank you again, and keep the prayers comin' in folks!!! Hope we can get this taken care of as soon as possible!

Yours, Luce
