Moving Update

Post by JFR »

I am all moved in which means that all my possessions now reside in my new apartment but there are still many many boxes to unpack. At least I have got all the furniture in place. This morning I go back to my old place to clean up a bit and then maybe a day of relaxing, although that is difficult with so many tasks staring me in the face. I have stuck to just a couple simple foods. I remember the days when in circumstances like a move I could just get take out but it is what it is and my own foods costs less money. The only one with D was the dog who spent 2 nights in a kennel. I had originally planned to keep him there only one night so his second day there they had to feed him some of their food rather than what he eats at home since I had only left one days worth of food. So last evening I was dealing with doggy d including cleaning the stairs in the hallway at 1:00AM when he didn't quite make it out on time. He seems fine today. I have been very careful about my food but I got lax with the dog and we both experienced the consequences. I am very tired and can't wait to have done with apartment #1 but I do believe I will like it here.

I can sympathize, we have 4 dogs, 3 of them senior citizens so they occasionally don't make it all the way outside and have to get me up in the middle of the night. We won't board them any more because they usually get sick and it is too hard on them and us.
I can also sympathize with the stress of moving, too. Hope it doesn't cause a setback. Maybe just unpack the essentials and do the rest a little at a time.

Best wishes Jean for your new apartment. Sorry to hear about the dog- poor baby. I had about three weeks worth of kitten D and know what a treat it is to wash hallways, walls, stairs, and every rug in the house. Although I got smart after the third time  and removed everything possible and packed it away until she got straightened out. She was a stray that ate who knows what and didnt do well on the Iams and Fancy Feast my other two eat. I eventually switched her to Blue Buffalo and she is doing great. It's a shame the the owner and pet's food has to cost a fortune but there's no substitute for a happy tummy and everything in the litter box (and toilet, haha) where it belongs.

Hopefully this weekend you can fit in a little unpacking and a lot of relaxing!

Jean, you wrote your post at 7:00 am and it's now almost 1:00pm here so I hoping by now you are done cleaning and ready to put your feet up for a little while. Pace yourself. Not everything has to be unpacked in a day. I'm glad you are already liking your new place. You'll be less stressed in the long run and that's better for many reasons.

Thanks folks. It wasn't really the kennel that made Theo sick. It was the fact that I hadn't provided enough food for him. He has stayed there before for brief periods of time without any problem. I really like the couple who own the kennel. Anyway, I didn't really have a choice. Having Theo around in the midst of my move would have made things infinitely more difficult and there really wasn't anyone around he could stay with.

Deb, I get Theo expensive frozen raw food and expensive grain free kibble. He seems to thrive on it. Luckily he only weighs 12 pounds so although it is expensive it's not like feeding a great dane.

And yes Carol, I was home by about 1:30 and have been relaxing ever since. The only problem with that is if I stop moving every muscle in my body tightens up. Maybe the lesson is that I should just stay more active all the time but I am by nature a slug and need an incentive like a move to push myself.

It will be so nice to be without the stress of my horrible neighbor. It can only benefit my health. I see not setback in my future unless I commit a food indiscretion and I try very hard to avoid those.

Jean,

The boxes can wait (I still have boxes of winter clothes and other items that I haven't unpacked yet)

Rest, nurture, recover from the physical and emotional inputs of the move, both you and your dog will benefit from calmness...

Did you increase your Vit d3? I would increase the dosage a bit to help recover

Peaceful hugs xoxox

Glad to hear you had time to unwind. I've got a hefty stash of both dry and wet food because I don't like shopping (too many people). I was glad to find Blue Buffalo has grain free products too. I was irritated to find Iams has many poor ingredients in their food and a higher price. I thought I was buying quality but just like with our foods, the labels say it all.

WAHOO!!!! The worst is over! Moving ranks at the top of the stress scale, but now it's time to chill and enjoy the wonderful PEACE and QUIET! You deserve it. Hope you, Theo, and the rats all settle in without incident!

Love,

Polly

Happy to hear you are in your new place! Everybody is right.....take it easy and "chip away" at the boxes. They aren't going anywhere..... Enjoy!

Hi Jean,

So glad to hear you and Theo have made it to your new home :). It sounds like it's a big improvement over where you came from.

Your comments remind me of the saying "an object that is in motion, stays in motion" . Anyhow, I always thought that dog owners have a health advantage, since they are forced out of the house to walk their dog. Personally, I have always had to exercise in order to have any energy at all.

All the best to you as you get yourself unpacked and in order in your new home.

Love,
Kari

Thank you all for your well wishes.

Gabes - I will have to get back on track with my D3 and other supplement taking. Seems all I have been able to do lately is pack, unpack and clean while sticking to safe foods. All other health habits have gone by the wayside. My routine has been so disrupted and my belonging so hard to locate that I am getting by with the minimal necessary to keep me from living in the bathroom. I am hoping this will change soon as things get settled.

Polly - funny you should mention the rats. The first thing I did when the movers had left was set up the rat cages. They had been in little traveling cases all day. Of course I was unable to locate their water bottles or food dishes so at 5:30 on a very long and tiring day I had to drive to my local pet store and buy them new bottles and dishes. Nothing is too good for the ratties.

Jean - I have slowed down on the unpacking although I think maybe I should unpack my kitchen things. I can probably continue to drink out of a mason jar for a little longer, maybe even indefinitely, but I am not sure what I would do if I had a guest with only one mason jar available for drinking.

Deb - when my previous dog was put down because of cancer at only 10 years old in a breed that often lives to 15, I decided that my next dog would get better quality food, although my previous dog got much better than average food. I just wanted to insure that my dog was getting optimal nutrition, knowing that it wasn't a guarantee of long life. I read dog food labels as carefully as I read human food labels.

Kari - It is nice to live in a place with only the noises of normal living rather than the screaming cursing howling stomping and banging that could break out at any time of the day or night in my previous place. It is true that the dog keeps me from being a hermit and forces me to be out and walking several times a day, especially since I live in an apartment and can't just open a door and let him out into the yard. I am a very good example of a thing in motion tends to stay in motion and even more of a thing at rest tends to sty at rest.

Hello Jean, I'm glad your move is over and that you can avoid the troublesome neighbor. I will certainly echo what the others said, pace yourself. Unpacking can happen at its own pace and time. I'm sure Theo will be happy as things settle down

Best of wishes for your new home

Find the Vit d3 and the rest can wait.

I carried an esky bag (cooler bag) with my supps /meds etc with me during the lead up, during, and post the move.
Even maintaining my 2000iu to 5000iu per day dosage my level halved.

I have left the supps/meds in the container they travelled in, if I have to evacuate the house in a hurryI will grab it so my supps and meds are with me!!

The worst is over, this stage is the home run of the moving marathon.
