Holidays and MC

Post by Heady »

My husband is booking summer holiday time at work & wants to book a trip to Maui in August. I am terrified to book for fear that I am ill. If I get Enterolab results in May & still have WD in Aug. would taking Endocort help get me thru the summer healing time without WD?
Any suggestions you would have to make this trip a success would be greatly appreciated!

In a word, "Yes". But of course, as Gabes would say, "It depends". Typically, Entocort brings significant relief of symptoms for most patients (especially if they are carefully avoiding all of their main food sensitivities) within a couple of weeks. If it hasn't helped after a month, it probably won't ever help. IOW, like all medications, budesonide is not effective for everyone, but it seems to be the best choice out there, for relatively safe, reliable, control.

So unless you happen to be unfortunate enough to be one of the people for whom it is not effective, or you happen to be allergic to one of the ingredients, and it causes intolerable side effects, it should provide a safety net that you could fall back on, if needed.

IMO, if you take your diet seriously, and pay close attention to labels, and do all of your own cooking, you have a good chance of being far enough along in your recovery program by then that you will feel confident to make the trip in August. To improve the odds of making that become a reality, if I were in your situation, I would be carefully avoiding at least gluten, all dairy products, and all legumes, beginning now. If the EnteroLab tests show that you are not sensitive to any of those foods, you can always add them back into your diet after you receive your results.

The main thing is to cut out gluten as early as possible, 100 %, because it takes a long time to heal the intestinal damage caused by gluten. Gluten antibodies have a half-life of 120 days, so they are extremely persistent. By contrast, antibodies to most other food sensitivities have a half-life of only about 6 days, so their effects fade away much more quickly. If you can't resist cheating on something in your diet, never cheat on gluten — pick one of the others. But of course if you're trying to heal as quickly as possible, that requires very rigid compliance to your diet, which means avoiding setbacks as much as possible.

Go for it!

I was going to say the same thing Tex said ( but he always says it better). Start with the diet now!
Entocort helped me within two days! So much so, that after a month, I had to cut the dose because of constipation. However, I also did a pretty strict elimination diet at the same time.
While in Hawaii, try to stick to fish and pork ( will you have a condo to cook in?) with rice as much as you can. Try not to indulge in too much of their yummy fruits and juice and if you drink alcohol, try to make it as "pure" as possible with no mix ins. Bring food for the plane trip. I love Hawaii and you should be OK by then if you do what you need to do now.

I'm eating rice, rice cakes, meat, fish, potato, sweet potato, carrot, beans&water for 10days now. Feel better today than I have in the last6mths. Being a diabetic, I ate fruit once a day. No alcohol ever! We'll have a condo across the street from Kameole beach for $80/ night. What a steal!!! I plan on cookin up a storm the first night&freezing it so I can pack myself personal lunches. The condo common area also has bbqs. Anyone have any input as to the deli chickens in grocery stores & their level of safety in case I am in a pinch some where.

there is a section about travelling

http://www.perskyfarms.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=62

I have travelled domestically, and internationally and maintained my GF/DF/SF/YF eating plan
there are a few others that have done car based, and airline based travel and shared their learnings in this spot.

So long as you do a bit of prep work/research, get a self cater /small kitchen type apartment, you should be grand.

Some additional hints:
if you can find a protein shake that you like, this makes day trips and flights super easy.

if you cant find a good organic/health food shop near to where you are going before you depart, buy some stuff and post it to the accommodation place and ask them to hold it for your arrival.

I have taken a small esky/cooler bag as part of my checked in luggage. I take pre made stew, or soup and the bone broth (all Frozen) and it keeps the other contents cool for the journey.

pack a couple of small containers / zip lock bags so when you are going out for the day, you have container for carrying your snacks etc.
Or for storing leftovers in the fridge, (left over dinner can be breaky the next day)

most of the time i make sure I have a good breaky (reheated veges/eggs/chicken or stew) use snacks and protein shake through the day and then find safe place to have dinner.

browse the celiac/colitis forums and research restaurants nearby to where you will be staying that advertise or come recommended for gluten free meals.

I eat store roasted chickens sometimes, but you have to read the "ingredients " to make sure that they are not injecting a solution that has something in it you can't have. I have not had a problem though. I am also OK with UNCURED salami and deli meats. They are handy for on the go snacks.

Glad to hear that you are feeling better!

Leah,

What's uncured deli meats? Aren't they all cured? I haven't touched them in years...

I googled ....the USDA classifies uncured as using no nitrates or nitrites in their processing. Applegate makes organic uncured deli ham they smoke it , then bake it. Boar's Head also has uncured meats.

Monique, I have tried a number of Applegate products and they are good.
Many Boar's Head deli products are also GF. Not sure if they're available in GA.

Heady, I traveled to Ireland last fall and would highly recommend it for ease of eating GF. I did not travel with food, except what I needed for the duration of the flight. I went to a grocery store upon arrival and found plenty of GF options to keep in the car so I was never without something to eat. The folks at the hotels and B&Bs were very up on GF eating. I was uneasy beforehand too, but the trip really re-assured me that my traveling days were not over.

Thanks Suze...I am a newbie. We were traveling 3X a year till this hit last Oct. We are renting a condo so will grocery shop the first morning , relax and then cook up a storm in the evening and freeze some things for lunches & breakfast etc. When we were in Maui last summer we visited many great restaurants.my hubby enjoys trying a new restaurant every night! It was ok with my diabetic diet cause I ordered fish with salad everywhere. But now I can't tolerate veg. I have been on the internet already and have found a GF restaurant close to our condo.

africa

Post by suzanne »

I am very interested in this discussion. I am going to Africa in the fall--will be driving around the Serengeti in a truck all day and in permanent bush camps at night where meals are provided--I have already started trying to figure out what to do. I don't want to take the medication if this can be controlled with diet but I CANNOT have D in Africa for countless reasons including few and poor bathrooms, no drug stores, very limited baggage allowance etc. I sure can't take antidiarrheals for 2 weeks, I dislike taking them at all. So I plan to talk to my doctor monday about starting the busen..... close enough to the trip to be safe and hope for no side effects. It is good to hear from you that know that I might be able to count on it. Suzanne

Suzanne, in my experience, you cannot expect budesonide to solve your issues independent of dietary change. I took budesonide/Entocort for over a year IN ADDITION to going gluten/dairy/soy free, before I saw any improvement. Your trip sounds challenging, and I don't see that you're going to have any choice about taking Immodium. I am three years out from initial diagnosis and I take 3 immodium a week.

Suzanne. Your trip sounds like a blast, but I would definitely take some Immodium with you. When I went to Mexico ( before MC) I had to take it every day just to get me through the trip. I don't think it will hurt you. You could also try the Pepto treatment, but I would do it at home first to see if it works for you. Try to bring some snacks that you know are safe, but it will be a challenge.
