Postoperative ileus after surgery for torn meniscus
I am a 61 year old woman with collagenous colitis as well as mastocytic enterocolitis. On April 7/2014 I had a partial meniscetomy. I had a spinal anaesthetic with no sedation. At home I took a total of 8 tablets of Emprecet 30 over a period of ~ 5 days for pain management. I was ambulatory and resumed a normal diet. However I was severely constipated which can often happen when taking codeine. Last year I had surgery for uterine cancer, abdominal adhesions, and a hernia all at the same time. I took far more codeine yet was not constipated. This week, the abdiminal distension and right sided pain grew progressively worse until Friday afternoon. I called the surgery clinic and they told me to take lactulose. After ~ 24 hours, it seemed to induce diarrhea. I stopped taking it last night as it made me feel quite ill and caused severe diarrhea. However my abdomen is still painfully tender and distended. It is not uncommon to have a postop ileus after surgery. I was wondering if my having colitis was a risk factor. Also, why is my abdomen still tender and distended? Is it possible that I developed another hernia or more adhesions from the ileus? Should I call my gastroenterologist? It is almost impossible to reach him. I only have a follow-up in May. Any thoughts?
