A Research Article That Makes No Sense

Post by tex »

Hi All,

See what you think, but I could see no logic in the contradictory claims made by this research study funded by the U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, and published in the April 7 issue of Arthritis Care & Research. The authors claim that the data show that:
The more low-fat or fat-free milk women drank, the slower the progression of osteoarthritis of the knee
But on the other hand, they concluded that:
eating higher amounts of cheese had the opposite effect, speeding the progression of knee arthritis in women
And to further confuse and confound the issue, they showed that:
Taking in higher amounts of yogurt had no effect on knee arthritis in either women or men, the study found.
and, regarding the benefits of drinking milk on osteoarthritis of the knee:
Milk consumption did not show the same benefit for men
Does anyone else see any any problems with those findings/conclusions, or is it just me?

Of course they blamed the increased arthritis caused by cheese, on the fat content of cheese. And since they couldn't find any other way to explain the gender difference, they blamed the good response to milk, and the bad response to cheese, and the total absence of any kind of response from men, on estrogen. But the ridiculous part is that none of these reasons/explanations were supported by any shred of scientific evidence, they were simply pulled out of the blue.

What has happened to medical research? It is progressively becoming less about science, and more about speculation. We do a lot of speculation about medical research here (and I'm especially prone to speculation), but we're not paid medical researchers — we're just trying to interpret the junk they publish, and make some sense of it. :sigh:

Tex,
it's almost looks like they unexpectedly got the grant..... then said 'Oh :shithead: sh*t! Now we have to put together a study!" It looks very poorly (and haphazardly) conceptualized. IMO.

Carol,

I certainly can't argue with your assessment.
