Gabes,
There are so many combinations of conditions that can promote the development of MC that I doubt that anyone will ever document the mechanisms by which all of them can occur. There are multiple ways that inflammatory modulators can be activated or released, and at this point, we have no way of knowing whether VDR expression is necessary, or even associated, with each and every one of them, but it appears that this may be the case.
It's pretty clear (by our combined experiences) that all of the effects that you mentioned play a part in the development of MC, so the odds are pretty high that they are involved with the expression of VDRs, though in some (or even all) cases, the influence may be secondary, rather than direct.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Hi Tex, I am going to send the site that Polly posted to the FSHD researchers. I have met many of the top FSHD researchers while attending medical conferences. In all the years and visits to the neurologists they never ordered any blood tests. Usually, I would have my PCP order any tests because he never questioned why I needed the test. Jon
Jon,
I agree that they definitely need to be aware of that information if they aren't already familiar with it.

thanks for the reply...
One thing that we may never find out (or prove) what came first the tainted VDR, or the major chemical explosion that taints the cells....
in my ponderings about inflammation etc maybe the bacteria/flora/microbes cant flourish and balance, until inflammation is minimised.
anyways, thanks again to all for this awesome discussion

I'm sure your ponderings are on target, because when the immune system is fully activated (as I described in my first response in this thread: http://www.perskyfarms.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=19677 ), life in the GI tract is bound to become mighty intense, because it would have to be like trying to live in a war zone, with skirmishes going on everywhere, and snipers taking a shot at you every time you stick your head up out of your foxhole.Gabes wrote:in my ponderings about inflammation etc maybe the bacteria/flora/microbes cant flourish and balance, until inflammation is minimised.

GREAT article by Dr. Fasano from 2005. Clearly illustrates some of the things we have been discussing here, and mentions the role of mast cells.

Another good article, this time from the Healthy Home Economist (not a scientist or doctor), explaining how even seasonal allergies originate in the gut. Explains why my husband's allergies improved when he went GF, and my daughter's are improving the further she gets away from her last dose of antibiotics (over a year ago).
She points to toxins produced by bacteria in the gut which raise histamine levels...hmmm.

How Seasonal Allergies Originate in the Gut
When the gut is out of balance, opportunistic and pathogenic microbes overgrow and take over dominance. These pathogens produce toxic substances which are the by-products of their metabolism. Some of these toxins actually play an important role in the body when the pathogens in the gut are controlled and kept in check by good flora. But, when the good flora is absent or not playing a dominant role, these pathogens can overproduce these toxins.
One such toxin produced by several types of gut pathogens (Proteus, E. coli, Staphylococci and others) is histamine which is actually an important neurotransmitter in the body.
When these microbes grow unchecked in the gut due to a lack of beneficial flora, they overproduce histamine causing many functions in the body that react to histamine to go haywire as excessive amounts pour into the blood.
Is Benadryl your best friend? If so, you know you potentially suffer from an overgrowth of pathogens in your gut that are overproducing histamine!

Then again, this doc blames all autoimmune diseases on candida yeast and it's incredible ability to change it's surface receptors and evade our immune response, sending it on a wild-goose chase and attacking connective tissue in the process.

very interesting articles.
never considered gut flora would alleviate nasal allergies, etc.
Candida would make sense with MC symptoms. Also symptoms of the "die off" when we stop feeding them sugar and take probiotics.
What I don't quite understand is why beneficial bacteria don't seem to 'stay' in the gut and need to be replenished in order to maintain balance.

Thanks for posting the link for the article about vitamin D and thyroid disorders. Makes my head spin but it is good reading. I had to chuckle because my son is at college and had a work-required physical completed at the student health services office and his answer to the nurse's question about why he takes the dose of vitamin D he does was simply "because it makes my mom happy." He has his own health issues and it's nice to see that in observing his mother's own struggles, he considers me a trustworthy source.
