Chamber of Commerce Banquet

Post by nerdhume »

ok, I am off to the Chamber of Commerce Banquet. DH received the distinguished citizen award last year so he is presenting it this year, otherwise I wouldn't be going. Have no idea what they are serving, but I am not taking my own food. Will let y'all know if I sleep on the bathroom floor tonight.
(Y'all is a southern term meaning more than one, I probably used it incorrectly because if it's more than 3 then it should be 'all y'all')

Hi Nerdhume, Coincidentally, I went to a large university dinner tonight. When I called in my RSVP, I requested a gluten free meal if possible. I was told it wouldn't be a problem. When I spoke to a waiter tonight he had no idea what I was talking about. Tried speaking to another one who left and never came back. I was the last person served. The other 249 people had finished their dessert when I finally got a hot, custom cooked dinner. We have to get used to being forgotten, snubbed, lied to and going hungry. I would rather go hungry than take a chance eating food that could make me sick.

I hope you can find something acceptable to eat. Don't hesitate to speak up and ask for what you need. Either do that or bring your own food.

 Ain't that the truth.

But :iagree: with you that I would rather go hungry than take a chance eating food that could make me sick. I can get over being hungry a heck of a lot faster than I can get over being sick.

Shelia, I didn't think about calling them and asking for a special meal...I will next time for sure.
I had a snack before going and just kept reminding myself there was plenty of food at home if I was still hungry.
I skipped salad, bread, and cake completely. Had about 1/2 a parmesan chicken breast, rice and about 2 bites of squash that wasn't totally overcooked. I ate very slowly and chewed each bite completely. Worked out ok, by that time everyone else was finished.
My PCP was seated at the next table, don't know if she noticed or not. Haven't been back to her since being referred to the GI in February.
So far no bad reaction that I can tell. I did feel a little achy this morning, might be coincidence or gluten.

Nerdhume,

You survived! YAY! Could also have been the cheese (dairy).

It's always surprising when we eat out and escape those land mines.

I went to a wedding reception last summer where the bride paid attention to the food needs of her guests. Out of 100 people, she knew that 3 were gluten-free. When I asked for my GF crab cake, it turned out that there were none left. Ten others had beaten me to the GF crab cakes! When people heard "GF" they opted for it. Don't know if they all were truly gluten sensitive or just avoiding it. Anyway, they made me another one. Wouldn't it be super if eating out could always be that easy!
