How many ounces of protein?

Post by MarthaE »

Just curious what is optimal daily protein intake for healing? Gonna try lamb soon, its a mid green for me, never had it before but the nutritional profile looks great!

I just googled a few sites... Daily recommended intake of protein for women is approx 46gm per day . Not taking into account for illness and recovery.

I am thankful for my struggle because without it I wouldn't have stumbled across my strength.

Hi Martha E--
My GI doc (and she is one of the good ones) told me that 50% of my diet needed to be protein and that it would take a lot of protein to heal an inflamed gut. It was like she'd been reading our PP website! It was the exact same good advice that I had received here. One thing is obvious-- we may as well forget about eating a balanced diet while healing. With so many food sensitivities and having to eliminate fiber it just wasn't/ isn't possible to eat a balanced diet. Meat and well cooked vegetables is the most effective MC diet.

I have to say that I was always amazed that I could feel so rotten and eat such a limited diet and my lab/blood tests would always be in the average range. The human body is an amazing thing.

Hi, Protein intake will vary according to body weight and daily activities. Go to GNC or Pro Source and they will explain how to calculate the proper amount. Make sure that the protein has the proper amino acids for assimulation like the BCAA's and some have protein enzymes added. Jon

Me too. Of course when I was at my worst, after a couple of years of being sick with no treatment plan, I was occasionally low on potassium, and apparently I was chronically low on B-12 back in those days (unfortunately it was never tested, however), but everything else was normal. The reason why I'm pretty sure that I was low on B-12 is because I developed peripheral neuropathy, even though I'm not a diabetic. But the liver can store up to 5 years worth of B-12, so apparently I had been having malabsorption problems for a long time.

I've been eating a very limited diet for almost 10 years now (it has evolved to mostly pork, eggs, corn, occasional potatoes, almond milk, coffee, and tea), and like Carol, my CBC numbers always make my doctor smile.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

I read recently on a Paleo blog or somewhere that it should be 1 gram per pound of body weight, and then I would keep it to 50% of what you eat, like Carol said. The rest needs to be mostly fat.

There are seven calories to a protein or carbohydrate gram, and nine to a fat gram, so if you look at your food's calorie count, it should be pretty easy to figure out what you are eating. Always assuming, of course that you can eat that much...
