I took budesinide for more than 2 years, weaning off a few months ago. WD stopped with the very first dose. 9 mg was too much for me and caused C. I dropped down to 3 mg a day and ate a strict GF, SF, DF, EF diet. I lost some hair, not as thick. Hopefully, it will grow back. I did not have weight gain and actually felt better than I do now. While on budesinide I could slip a little with my diet, intentionally or unintentionally, and feel pretty well.

For me, budesinide was a life saver.

HI Sport, I didn't gain weight either on budesonide and I definitely didn't have 'moon face'. In fact initially I was still losing weight (but my LC was accompanied with considerable nausea). I started on 9mg and was already GF, DF. I was still having gurgling so I discontinued soy after several weeks. That made a big difference.

I was on budesonide for a total of 4 1/2 months. It was time to reduce the dosage when I started to have cramping and C. Then I'd drop to 6mg and did fine on that, then when those side effects started again, it was time to drop to 3mg. Then I titrated off. But I can't say I had any other side effects. I didn't lose my hair. It reduced the inflammation and got me back on my feet quickly. It gave me time to tweak my diet so that when I titrated off I didn't relapse. I did find I was reacting to eggs as soon as I stop taking it so it did mask that. But I would do it again-- it was a life saver for me.

Budesinide acts a little differently than other steroids. About 85% of budesinide is released in the intestine while only 15% is released into the bloodstream. It is a relatively safe steroid, emphasis on relatively. Repeated use of budesinide can cause bone loss. It was most important to me to stop the WD as quickly as possible.

Budesonide has pretty much saved me. I tried asacol first because I was worried about the side effects of budesonide. But asacol was a nightmare of D and my throat kept closing up which was scary. I responded immediately to 9 mg budesonide - no D! The first couple of days I had no bm's but then my system seemed to wake back up. Now my bm's occur regularly and are kinda, almost normal - thank god. I also immediately began a gluten free diet and after about 2 weeks felt dramatically better. Last week I ingested some Uncle Ben's flavored rice and felt bad pretty soon thereafter - not D but close. But 2 days later I was fine. I do not plan to be on this medication for long as I worry about bone density. I have now taken it for almost a month. I have not felt any side effects (no weight gain, no hair loss, no moon face). Good luck!

Hi Sport,

Budesonide has been the only drug I've taken for my MC. Initially, I was on it for 6 weeks with no side effects except maybe some minor insomnia. These days when I travel I take one pill a day for the 10 days I'm away then stop when I get home. It's worked perfectly and I don't fear my holiday being spoiled by an accidental 'glutening'. A couple times I've flared-up with inflammation and Budesonide saved me. I hope you are able to use it successfully and that will give you time to remove gluten, and/or dairy & soy from your diet.

Good vibes,
Cory :goodvibes:

Hi there,
Entocort was a lifesaver for me as well. While I didn't gain any weight or get the "moon face", I did notice the hair loss and had some facial acne breakouts but the positives of this drug far outweighed the negatives for me. It literally gave me my life back.
