I'm back...

Post by jgivens »

I have not posted or even peeked at the forum for quite some time--almost a year! In that time, I've had two foot surgeries (August 2013 and Feb 2014, successful and without incident as far as making my MC worse--HOOORAY!), have seen a son happily married, and greeted a new grandchild (December). Thru all of this, I have been fairly stable MC-wise. I've had what I would call some incidents with getting (unknowingly) "glutenized" and while NOT pleasant, at least I had an idea of how to correct it.

I discovered that I had a message this morning when I visited the forum that has been there since December. I feel very badly for not having even visited the site because you all are such interesting people and I have enjoyed posting with all of you. Sooo many new people since I last posted as well!

One thing that has been more of an annoyance, but seems to be getting worse, so I probably need to pay attention to it, is eczema. I have always had eczema, but this winter (and it was a particularly bad winter here in Michigan) it got worse and now that we have had glimmers of spring-like weather, I thought it would go away. I have it in my ears (the most distracting and annoying), HAD it on my eyelids and my eyes were so itchy and dry all winter that I finally broke down and went to the ophthalmologist, who gave me ointment and drops which helped. I also have it in my nose and now, on my scalp. I did not think about it being part of the whole autoimmune problem until recently and now I am starting to wonder if it has something to do with something in my diet. I can have dairy, but maybe I can't any more.😱 Might have to try my diet without dairy.

I saw a ridiculously funny cartoon in the New Yorker. It shows a couple sitting together looking at a plate of unknown food on a table. It says, "Jack Spratt could eat no fat, gluten, shellfish, soy, tomatoes, yeast, MSG, or chocolate." Jack is saying, "I can taste the gluten." The next frame says, "His wife could eat no salt, dairy, sugar, citrus, or eggs." Third frame says, "Neither of them could eat anything that wasn't kosher, artisanal, and organic." Fourth frame says, "And betwixt the two of them, they had no friends whatsoever." Jack is saying to his wife, "Why doesn't anyone like us?" She replies, "Because we are jerks."

Sometimes I feel that way, particularly when friends try to cook to what I can eat! I have told them to let it go--that it is too difficult and that I have learned to know what I can eat for the most part and I would not expect them to even venture a guess. The deal I have usually made is that if they don't worry about it, I will feel better if they are not offended when I don't eat everything--or maybe anything. It seems to work the best for me if my friends understand that I am not able to eat certain things and they will neither feel responsible or offended if I don't eat something--or even most things--that they may serve up.

Gonna post it to Facebook....but not to the Gluten Dude. He doesn't have much of a sense of humor.

Thanks for doing that, Joan. If we can't laugh at this stuff, what can we laugh at?!?

Hi Jane,

Welcome back. As soon as I saw the word "eczema" in your post I was pretty sure that I knew the solution to your problem, but I see that you have already figured it out yourself. Yes, the problem is almost surely one of the proteins in dairy products. It may not be the primary casein protein (since I see that your EnteroLab test for casein was negative), but there are many other proteins in milk that can also cause eczema problems. Here's some more info to back up my position:

Casein and Eczema

Were you aware that if you are accidentally exposed to some dairy in your diet, you can help to prevent eczema symptoms by taking an antihistamine?

It appears to me that the only diseases that are not associated with food are those caused by bacteria or viruses, and even many of those are connected with diet in one way or another.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Welcome back Jane,
Glad to hear life has been busy and the MC symptoms relatively controlled. Gives us newbies hope for a future that is not chained to the toilet bowl. Lol
Sorry to hear your eczema is flaring. Hopefully excluding the dairy from your diet will calm that down.

I am thankful for my struggle because without it I wouldn't have stumbled across my strength.

What are you willing to let go of so you can live the life you know you deserve?

Hi, Jane. I can so relate to the what to eat when you're with friends. I started to take my own food everywhere. I don't want any special attention or people worrying about what I can eat. I am used to it and it's fine with me -- as long as they let it go! I went out to eat with friends and the server kept making comments about what I was eating compared to what they were eating. It was really starting to annoy me. Yes, I would like to eat french fries too, but I don't feel like I should have to explain that to the server! This is some journey that we're on but it is what it is.
