A "Critical Error" message, usually means that the server is experiencing more requests than it can handle, (IOW, it is temporarily overloaded), and it can't process your request to access the database for this message board. This is usually a transient problem, that occurs from time to time, and will normally resolve on its own.
I'm sorry that you're having problems losing posts. Really, though, you shouldn't ever lose a post because of that database access problem. You just need to hit the "back" button on your browser, to get back to your message. Sometimes, you will have to hit it twice, especially if you have been logged out, (timed out), but even then, if you hit the "back" button twice, you will find your post, and all you have to do is hit the "submit" button to enter it.
Anytime you get a "critical error" that refers to database access, just hit the back button, and try again. Sometimes it helps to wait a second before trying again. If it still doesn't work, after several tries, copy the text from your post to a"wordpad", or "notepad" file, and save it in a "My Documents" folder, or somewhere on your hard drive, so that you can submit it later, after the glitch is past.
The only times that I have ever lost a post, was when I accidentally hit the wrong key while typing, and deleted it, or sent it to Kingdom Come, or wherever. I have never lost a post because of a phpBB malfunction, or a "critical error", even though I have encountered the situation many times. The post is always still there--you just have to look for it with the "back" button on your browser.
If this doesn't allow you to overcome the problem of losing posts, please let me know.
Love,
Wayne

Hi Karen.
What happens when you use the "back" button? Where does it take you? Do you see any other posts in the thread that you were responding to? You won't necessarily see your own post, (the missing post), unless you scroll up or down.
Also, a few times, after striking the wrong key, one of my posts has disappeared from the screen, but usually, I only have to scroll up, to find the post.
The "critical error" scenario only prevents access to the database, at that instant. It does not delete any pending operations from your computer, and should have absolutely no effect on any data, on your own computer. IOW, I don't see how it could be deleting the message window from your computer, unless the database has been updated. If this is actually happening, you might try clearing your cookie cache. Some browsers are very sensitive to corrupted cookie caches.
Love,
Wayne
