Selenium

If you think this article doesn't pertain to you keep reading. About half way down:
It is not uncommon for those with AIT to be selenium deficient due to their diets or other autoimmune conditions they may have (such as Celiac’s, Crohn’s, or Ulcerative Colitis). 90% of the body’s immune system resides in the small intestine where these autoimmune disorders are seated. So those with autoimmune disorders often avoid gluten as it intensifies the immune response. Unfortunately, most selenium is taken in from bread, pasta, grains, and flour enriched with selenium. All those who have gone gluten free avoid these foods due to the immune system’s response to the gluten. Furthermore, the majority of selenium is absorbed in the small intestine, so those with autoimmune issues are at a higher risk of Selenium deficiency.

Jean,
Some foods with selenium listed here, and brazil nuts are #1. I am going to eat a few everyday, now, too.

And... my beet kvass is almost ready to try!

Selenium dose
A presenter (Wentz a pharmacist) on the Thyroid Summit suggested 200 mcg so I need to double my selenium.

I recently bought a dehydrator and I now soak and then dehydrate all my nuts and seeds. I got this dehydrator http://www.excaliburdehydrator.com/dehy ... libur-2400 and it works very well.

Brandy,
Just as Jean said, I also soak & dehydrate all my nuts & seeds before eating them. Sometimes I dehydrate them in the oven on the lowest temperature, or I use the dehydrator.
It takes the Brazil nuts longer to dry out due to their size.

FWIW, my Selenium dose is 2 200 mcg tablets daily. That is what was recommended by the doctor suggested I take selenium to stop hair loss. Since then two other doctors have mentioned that I would benefit from taking selenium. Both times I reminded them that selenium was on the list of supplements I provided to them.

Hi Jean and Linda,
Thanks for the tips. After drying out the nuts I'll freeze them and put a 2 week stash (2 brazil nuts per day) in the fridge. I'm watching my weight which is kind of funny for an mc-er. I love nuts but if I have too many around I'll eat them so the other types I'll save for movies or travel.
