Magnesium - Good info !!

Post by Gabes-Apg »

Magnesium is my new 'bestie' (best friend) it is up there with Vit D3 as to the answer for so many symptoms/issues.

I was recently gifted some money, i pondered a new lens for my camera, or some new shoes, then with all the events of the past week it was books I most wanted, nutrition type text books as I delve into the information about how to improve cell health (the next stage after reducing inflammation)

Thanks to Pat for posting the article the other day about Magnesium and Vit D3, I purchased The Magnesium Miracle by Carolyn Dean, MD ND -I am only in the introduction and there is lots of wow!

So many of the ‘sideline’ / 'related' / 'additional' health issues that MC’ers get – magnesium deficiency is a key part of the why

for some, the info below may not be anything new or groundbreaking, given some of the recent discussions from new members I thought it was very applicable/of interest ...

Some extracts: (any highlights were done by me)

Magnesium and Yeast Overgrowth – (page xxviii)
A powerful trigger of inflammation is uncontrolled yeast overgrowth. Yeast produces 178 different chemical antigens in its normal life cycle. These chemicals can be absorbed into the bloodstream and set up a never-ending inflammatory cascade (gabe edit Sound familar anyone?)
Acetaldehyde is one of the powerful toxic by-products of yeast, and magnesium is required to break it down, If there isn’t enough magnesium, unopposed acetaldehyde can cause many side effects. Besides candida, exposures to acetaldehyde occur due to alcohol consumption, exhaust from cars and trucks, cigarette smoking, and the use of high-fructose corn syrup.
Acetaldehyde is toxic to the brain, liver and kidney and can cause depletion of B Vitamins. It also can block hormone receptors affecting the thyroid, adrenals, and pituitary. Symptoms of thyroid imbalance are very common today partly because thyroid hormones, which may appear normal in blood tests, can’t get inside cells to do their work as a result of chronic acetaldehyde poisoning. The same happens with female hormones, especially estrogen not getting into cells, whereas blood estrogen levels may be normal.

Some GREAT information about good ways to increase Magnesium...

Carolyn Dean’s favourite Magnesium Supplements
1. ReMag – picometer-size, liquid ionic form of magnesium in 8 ounce bottles. Average daily dosage is 1 teaspoon, which is equal to 300mg. You can take it in doses of ½ teaspoon twice a day. This may seem like a low dose, but because ReMag is 100 percent absorbed at cellular level, it is much more effective and does not cause a laxative effect.
You can swish reMag in an ounce of water around your mouth for health gums and immediate absorption. Only do this if you have no mercury containing amalgam fillings. Mercury reacts with other metals and minerals

2. Natural Calm – powdered magnesium citrate sweetened with organic stevia is one of the most common forms of magnesium. You do get a slight laxative effect with it, just space out your doses. Mix with water and sip throughout the day.

3. JigSaw Magnesium SRT, only chelated form of magnesium that I recommend. Chelation is supposed to offer superior absorption, but the only one that seems to delivery is JigSaw Magnesium because of its sustained release technology, comes in capsule, you still have to be careful to spread out your daily dosage, even though it is advertised as having little laxative effect, some do get laxative effect from it

4. Ancient Minerals Magnesium Oil – supersaturated magnesium chloride dissolved in distilled water. When sprayed on the skin, it bypasses the intestines and is absorbed into the tissues of the body. It also stimulates DHEA production. It may sting at full strength, feel free to dilute it with distilled water or body lotion. One lotion form is called Magnesium Lotion Ultra, which contains added MSM (a sulphur compound)

If this type of information is useful, let me know and I will continue to post paragraphs/key learnings from the book.

I use Magnesium Ultra everyday. Has helped with leg and arm cramping. Good for me to bypass digestive system. Works great as a general body lotion, Sinai just put on after morning shower. Takes months to bring mag levels up, but it's the only thing that has worked for me. Mag supplements make my ad worse.
Diagnosed April 2014, after losing 50 lbs. in 6 months.
Delzicol April 2014 (no effect, after 3.5 weeks-removed)
Endicort April 2014 - helping, but still losing.
Pepto-Bismal 9 a day - May 2014

Thanks, Gabes. That is great info! Do you know or does Carolyn Dean say how many mg's you get from the topical forms of mag?

My bottle says 600 MG elemental mag in each dose (I think a tablespoon). But that is not what you absorb. I don't think you can know for sure. It would depend on your age, your skin, where you applied it, level of skin hydration(more moist, more absorption). I just use most days. It has helped. No risk of ad from too much in the GI. -Chris

I went to Dr. Dean's website and am reading her free ebook on magnesium. I think she answered my question about mg in the topical mag:

The"magnesium"oils"that"I’m"familiar"with"contain"about"3,000mg"of"
magnesium"per"teaspoon."And"there"are"about"40"sprays"in"one"teaspoon."We"don’t"
know"the"exact"absorption"of"this"form"of"magnesium"but"many"people"get"relief"of"
their"magnesium"deCiciency"symptoms"when"using"it."

I don't know why all the quotation marks. They weren't on the original. But if I do the math correctly 40 sprays = 3000mg then 4 sprays = 300mg? Is that correct?

Pat,

The quotation marks are spaceholders (each represents a space) from the digital book formatting.

Your math looks good to me.

In the book, Carolyn says that the norm for how much mag to take used to be 'increase the dose gradually, once you start to have D, reduce back to the level that you don't have D'

She does suggest getting the test that will accurately show mag levels in the cells, the magnesium RBC test is more accurate than the serum (avail via direct labs if your doctor won't assist) then work on figuring out the type of mag, and delivery method that works best,
She also states that her recommended level for magnesium is basically the higher end of the 'normal range' of the rbc test.

Linda, forecast is for rainy weekend here, perfect for reading and sharing info with my pp mates !!

Pat, if you are still unsure maybe email her, the fact she has a free e-book and her very open helpful tone in the book I am reading, she sincerely wants people to be well!

Chris, great info,
I was already aware it was going to take me 6 months to correct the deficiency, now with my Pyrrole result, we know another reason why, and have some science as to how to fix various nutrient/mineral issues in my cells. We think it will be about 9 months to fix the various issues.

Thank you Gabes for sharing that information. What do you take for calcium and does your calcium also have magnesium in it?

Nancy
for a while I used calcium Carbonate powder (from compounder) for the gerd. Once i started the high doses of Vit d3 and Rantadine I stopped taking it.

I had my bone density checked just after MC Dx, it was all good. Based on the learnings of this group, I kept the focus on Vit D3, healing leaky gut, and the long term plan of avoiding steroids, calcium levels or risk of low calcium thus far have not been on the radar.

With all that I am learning about Magnesium deficiency, I am very glad I didnt have too much of calcium supps, as it would have made things way worse.

at the moment my only calcium is via some rice milk in my rice protein drink. I will be making sure the pyrrole issues are fixed and my magnesium levels in the cells are in the super dooper range before i take calcium supplements.

PS - the photo of your grandson graduating was wonderful, you look well, very healthy!

Thanks Gabes. Mag. has always given me D, but I might consider one of the other forms.

I tried chelated magnesium (Bluebonnet) Albion Amino Acid chelate. Buffered magnesium glycinate chelate in a 200 mg dose once a day. After about 3-4 days I was going to the bathroom several times a day and didn't feel quite right so I stopped taking it. Things returned to normal. Funny, I was taking a calcium with magnesium as oxide every day for years and never had any issues, I just don't know if that is the best one to take though. I do have osteopenia so that is why I make sure to take calcium plus get some in my almond milk smoothies every day. I was wondering if I may be low in magnesium and if that would contribute to my tremors or if they would be a little better if I was getting the right magnesium. So much to think about and try to figure out.

Gabes, thank for the nice compliment.

Nancy
I am still in the early stages of the book! As I go through I am sure we will find some answers.
(still in the intro section)

I am hoping by the end of the i can have a bit of a table that has the following headings
(and all the relevant info below these headings for each of the magnesium type)

magnesium type:
good for:
Oral or Derma:
dosage:
how much elemental magnesium:
comments/key things to note:
Likely hood of causing D:

if at the end we dont have the answers, i am sure we will be able to email the writer.
If anyone can think of other 'headings' for this table, i welcome feedback, suggestions etc

Leah
my other main intent with the table, is that we should be able narrow down the options for D dominate MC'ers and C dominate MC'ers -(and the various stages inbetween D and C) further, what type of mag works best for histamine and what works best for muscle, what works best for calcium absorption etc etc.

I am pretty confidant that part of my success with it, has been having the blend of different types of magnesium, so it will be correcting mag deficiency in the whole of the body and the cells.

I have tried the mixed magnesium forms and magnesium glycinate and get D. Chris, what is Mag Ultra and do you have a link to where I can find it online? My bloodwork says my magnesium is normal but I don't buy it. Plus this vag itching hasn't stopped in three months. I want to take some as the article says it helps with yeast/candida. But I don't want to waste anymore on supplements that give me D.

Thanks!
Strongly believe I have a form of MC that began to flare December 27, 2013.
