When Magnesium makes me worse;
[nb – measurements and products recommended are USA based, I have not checked the inactive ingredients of any products/supplements mentioned]
When people take a supplement they have the expectation they it will make them feel better. We know that’s not always the case with drugs; in fact, people seem to accept that drugs will given them side effects.
A few people wonder if it can make them feel worse. There are at least a dozen reasons why you might feel worse after taking magnesium, I will explain these and reassure you of the safety of magnesium
1. You are not taking enough
When you feel worse with magnesium, the hundreds of enzyme systems that require magnesium are getting jump started and your body simply wants more. This doesn’t mean you’ll have to increase your magnesium ad infinitum! You will reach a saturation point of magnesium stores and actually be able to decrease your magnesium intake.
If you get the laxative effect on 200-300mg orally, it is the main reason i recommend the Re-Mag, so you can get the therapeutic effect before you get the laxative effect.
2. You’re taking too much
you can also feel worse on magnesium if you take too much too soon. This usually happens if you have fatigue and weakness from magnesium deficiency. Those in this category should start very slowly on any new supplement or drug. For people with chronic fatigue and adrenal issues, start with ¼ dose and work up as your body adapts.
3. You have low blood pressure from long standing magnesium deficiency and adrenal fatigue.
You may have heard that magnesium can lower blood pressure, so you worry about that happening because your blood pressure is already low. Another instance where you start the supplement at ¼ the dose and slowly build up
The minerals offered in ReLyte electrolyte replacement are important to support adrenals and thyroid and improve potassium levels
4. You are on heart meds, and as your health improves because of magnesium supplementation your meds are becoming toxic
That because you may not require them anymore, not because magnesium is bad for you. Consult with your doctor, discuss that you want to wean off the meds.
5. You have started taking iodine or thyroid medication or you have hyperthyroidism
Either of these speeds up your metabolism, which can give you heart palpitations that have nothing to do with magnesium. The key to recognising this problem is that you have an elevated pulse rate and the magnesium you normally use to control your heart palpitations is no longer working.
6. You are taking too much Vitamin D
You have been feeling great on your magnesium and then you begin taking high dose Vit D, and find yourself experiencing magnesium deficiency symptoms. Magnesium is required to transform Vit D from its storage form to its active form and for many other aspects of Vit D Metabolism.
That means if you start taking extremely high doses of Vit D3, you can plummet into magnesium deficiency and not know what is happening.
7. You are taking too much calcium and its pushing out your magnesium.

8. You are taking fairly high doses of magnesium and not taking trace minerals or drinking enough water.
Trace minerals help your body hold onto water. To treat trace mineral deficiency I recommend ¼ teaspoon of sea salt in every pint of drinking water. I recommend you drink half your body weight in ounces of water each day.
9. You are not taking enough B vitamins
Vit B6 and B2 are important vitamins that assist magnesium absorption into cells. A number of papers have reported the relationship of magnesium and B6 in the treatment of PMS. Most recently research has been directed at the benefits of magnesium and Vitamin B6 in autism and ADHD. I don’t recommend high dose synthetic B6 because of the occurrence of peripheral neuropathy in a small percentage of people. I recommend food based B complex. Grown by Nature brand has 2mg of B6 per tablet
10. You are mercury toxic
Mercury drastically increases the excretion of magnesium and calcium from the kidney, which may be the cause of the kidney damage seen in mercury poisoning. Removing mercury from the body is important, but not the focus of this book. Taking sufficient amounts of magnesium can help detoxify this dangerous heavy metal.
11. You are toxic from bad diet, prescription medications, heavy metals or environmental chemicals.
As magnesium enters your cells, it stimulates internal detoxification processes and dumps chemicals from your cells into the lymphatic system. These are eventually excreted through your skin, kidneys, and colon. Toxins surfacing the skin can cause skin irritation, inflammation, hives and rashes.
This type of reaction is not an allergy to magnesium, but a simple detox reaction, the body is now more able to do its job.
12. You are taking a drug that contains fluoride

This is a great run down to print off as a reminder as to why certain feelings and issues may arise when starting a new supplement and/or when a supplement is quite depleted and what to look for as your body gets filled in so to speak.
