Guess we can all learn from bad experiences...
Hi All,
I went to my company Christmas party last Tuesday. BTW I got a standing ovation for my flowers, flattering and embarrassing. I'm the only one the GM mentioned.
Anyway, I drank red wine. I got pretty drunk and don't quite know how. I ate a little before I went and didn't think I drank that much. I ended up with bad diarhea and vomiting. Today, 8 days later, I have still not had a normal BM. I'm sure the wine was cheap, so it could have had additives. I didn't eat anything, but this sure feels like a food reaction.
Has anyone else had an experience like this? I'm pretty embarrassed but thought I should share. I know one of the problems is that I used to drink beer at functions like this and knew how to pace myself. Wine may get to me faster. I'm kind of stumped. I know I won't be repeating this again!

Morning, Jean,
Congratulations on the outstandind work performance. You obviously have a world class green thumb, and it's great that your boss appreciates your talents that much. Please don't feel guilty about celebrating a little, you certainly had a right to do that. It's just a shame that the wine, or possibly something else, bit you in the butt.
I'm stumped too, about the wine. I'm not a wine drinker, because the few times I've tried a few ounces, I got light-headed pretty quick, and I didn't much care for the feeling.
When something really knocks our digestive systems for a loop, it can take a while for things to get back to normal. Still, I'm surprised that it would be affecting you after eight days. Could you have a picked up a virus that came along at a coincidental time, and complicated the situation?
I hope you can get rid of whatever is bothering soon, especially since you shouldn't have had this kind of reaction in the first place.
Love,
Wayne

Jean,
I hope you are over feeling embarrased. No need for that.
I'm not much of a drinker but I will admit to having "overindulged" a couple or three times in my life. Once was with wine and I certainly don't want to repeat that experience. I believe our metabolism at the time of the overindulgence has something to do with how hard and fast it hits us.
Nothing to back that up, just something I think. I don't drink often enough to even check it out.
I sure hope you are feeling better soon.

I suspect that those of us that have, at the least, the potential for leaky gut syndrome also absorb alcohol and anything dissolved or combined with it very differently than anyone with a normal digestive system. I enjoy a drink on occasion but stay away from sweet drinks and red wines in that I suspect that the alcohol makes it much easier for sugars and the fermented fruit in the wine to go through my gut lining and enter my blood stream, to say nothing of the alcohol . Not a nice feeling , ever.
You would think us MI’s would be used to food hangovers. A real hangover is even worse for me so I just do my best not to overindulge any indulgence.
Hope you are feeling better Jean.

Matthew,
As usual, I think you are right on the money, especially since alcohol is one of the worst offenders known to cause LGS. Sugar is also a common trigger for LGS, so wine is probably a double whammy for us.

Hi Jean!
Congrats on the recogntion for your job performance. You undoubtedly deserve it......especially after that shabby treatment from your former employer. I hope they are eating their hearts out.
I think the above ideas are excellent. Also, was it a sweet or dry wine? My understanding is that in a dry wine, the yeast digest all of the sugar and then die off. So, if it was a sweet (or young) wine you drank, the sugars certainly could have given you a problem. I do fine with one particular very dry merlot, and I actually take it with me whenever I go to a party. I have learned to do that after having some incidents similar to yours. Also, your idea about cheap wine additives is a good one. Do you have a problem with sulfites?
And it's true that one serious incident can set that old D in motion for days. Bummer, isn't it? Are you feeling better yet?
Love,
Polly

Hi Jean,
Just one glass of wine does what you're describing to me, whether it's white or red. So having a disruption after 8 days would be what I would expect to happen. I'm sorry; that's not fun.
I don't know exactly what it is about wine/beer, etc that does it. It may be the sugars, the sulfites, or whatever substance it is in red wine that gives the headache that some people get. The only alchohol that I really drink much is Kahlua, and vodka from potatoes. Those 2, for some reason, don't make me sick. Beer and wine make me the sick-est.
Anyway, I hope you're better soon. I take two Caltrate 600 Plus tablets before breakfast and dinner, and I'm fixed up within 30 hours. I don't know why it works except that it absorbs irritating substances and calms things down. It gives me solid BMs.
Congratulations on the recognition. It makes me miss working almost . . Love, Marsha

To answer your questions, I was drinking a merlot, so there shouldn't have been any sugar left. I drink red wine often, but usually only a glass, which puts me to sleep. BTW, anyone close to a Trader Joes, their $2.99 wines are as good as $10-12 bottles.
I'm sure I didn't pick up a virus because I felt fine otherwise.
It's two weeks later now and I feel OK, but still have soft serve poops. I've had a terrible time with leg cramps since the party--had to eat a lot of food with calcium to get rid of them.
I'm still puzzled how the wine hit me so fast. I drank my share in college and never got sick and definitely never had D. I don't know if it's the disease, old age or something in the wine. The one thing I do know is that I'm not doing it again!!!
Polly, good idea about bringing your own. Have you been able to bring it into places that serve alcohol? I passed on the soda water because it came out of the same nozzle that the other sodas did. I was afraid I'd get contaminated. Sigh

Jean,
I hope you're over being embarrassed, too. Heck, in this group how could we be embarrased about anything?
I enjoy white wine, beer, and tequila. I drink champagne once a year at New Years. I like Baileys in my coffee or tea once in a while, too. I make my own wine to cut the costs, plus it tastes pretty darn good. If I could grow agave here I might even try making my own tequila .
Anyway, I hope you're doing better and feel secure knowing you'd have a pretty hard time shocking this group .
Love
Peg

Marsha,
As to reactions to coconut, or shrimp, dried fruit (like hiker's mix), or potato chips, that all depends. I can eat all of those things but only certain brands. Many brands contain small amounts of my intolerances so I would react.

Hi Jean,
I just took a glance at your list of intolerences, and they are really similar to mine: dairy, gluten, 99.9% of all soy, and rice. (I can drink one brand of soy milk called "MoonRose", but no other kind of soy, soy flour, or soymilk) Is it not a weird list of intolerences we have? Things that are perfectly fine for most people! Especially the rice. I thought you might want to go to a site called nosulfites.com and see if any of what it says rings a bell for you. It helped me make sense of the last of my wierd food intolerences.
See ya!
