Terre, it's frustrating not to get results. I agree, it would be so much easier to give up favorite foods if it was a trade off for Norman. I've been GF and DF since Dec 2011 and SF and EF since feb 2012. I'm careful with high histamine foods and legumes too. I still primarily have D/WD. It sucks but it has helped so I won't be changing how I eat. I had some watermelon and refried beans tonight (very small amount) against my better judgement. I also had a Norman. Go figure, but I'm not complaining!

I went to my class reunion a couple of weeks ago with DH. I paid $55 for my meal and knew I wouldn't be able to eat it. I ate at home first and brought an insulated bag with a freezer pack and a covered plate. I put the bag under my chair. When the filet mignon, broccoli and baked potato arrived, I put them on my plate, covered it and put it back under my chair. I don't think anyone noticed that I didn't eat a thing.

As others have mentioned, you get used to not being able to eat what others do. I wasn't tempted by any of the food that was served. What makes me long for certain foods is the aroma: chocolate, grilled onions, bacon, etc.

It will get easier and you will get better.

Hi Terre,

Yes, we can all relate to what you're going through - most of us have been where you are now and it's really tough. Fortunately, it does get easier over time :).

I have just started teaching yoga, and am busy planning classes. The theme for my next class will be to "abandon perfectionism". Relating this to MC management, when we do everything we can to control symptoms, it is good enough!!! Beating ourselves up for being less than perfect in our own eyes, only adds stress, which then results in more symptoms  .

In my research on the theme of perfectionism, I came across the following poem by Leonard Cohen, which resonated strongly with me:

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in

Love,
Kari

Kari,

Right on target! And thanks for the poem. I've long been a fan of Cohen's style of writing, including his music.

I hope the topic resonates with your students.

Love,
Tex

Thanks so much for the Leonard Cohen links, Jean. I remember he and Judy Collins singing duets back in the early 1970s (?) 60s (?). I worked in New York City a very long time ago. I'm a big fan, too.

Sheila and Jean,

I just happen to have a VHS tape of a performance by Leonard Cohen that I recorded back on October 29, 1988, when he performed on Austin City Limits (during the years when he and his group were at their best, IMO). Of course recording technology being what it was 25 years ago, it's obviously not high def quality, but both the video and audio are pretty decent for the time. I've been intending to convert it to digital form, but I never quite got around to it. If you would like a copy, maybe that would prompt me to set some time aside and make the conversion.

It will be too large a file to attach to an email (it's almost 57 minutes), but it could be transferred by means of Dropbox, or I could send you a DVD. Dropbox is a free file-sharing service, but you have to join and download the ap in order to use it.

Let me know if you are interested. I reckon the offer is also open to any other Cohen fans who might read this.

Hey, guys!

Great to find some other Leonard Cohen fans. "Suzanne" was probably one of the first songs I remember listening to as a child and it is still one of my favorites. My mom listened to a lot of Leonard Cohen, Elvis Costello and Peter Paul and Mary when I was young and instead of rebelling against her style as I got older I wound up embracing it. Thanks for the links, Jean, I enjoyed them very much.

Love,
Erin

I use a hot air popper for popcorn to eliminate fat. As for eating at parties, I bring my own food. On occasion when asked about my diet I say that my body isn't capable of digesting those foods at the moment. When I got diabetes DX the analogy I made was... If your body is allergic to strawberries & they make your face swell then you don't eat them.... Well my body doesn't process sugars so I don't eat it. Now there are a whole host of foods causing inflammation in my body but because we aren't able to see it we don't seem to believe it's happening. If our reactions to these foods were visible on the outside of our body we would be quicker to act to eliminate what may be causing it. 5yrs ago I took amoxicillin for a toothache for 10days, on day 11 I woke up completely covered in huge hives. I now am very careful not to expose myself to mold or penicillin type meds. As you fine tune your diet and begin to see results the temptations and craving will lessen. After the first month of eliminating sugar from my diet the cravings stopped. You can do this. I pack a lunch everywhere, Even in restaurants when I go with friends or family. I can't eat in oriental restaurants so when I went out with friends I ordered only white steamed rice and brought my own cold chicken thigh and had it to eat with the rice. I don't care what anyone thinks cause they didn't have to live with WD 10X/day for 6 mths. Hang in there it gets easier. You can do this. The rewards are great!

I am thankful for my struggle because without it I wouldn't have stumbled across my strength.

What are you willing to let go of so you can live the life you know you deserve?

Thanks so much, Tex, for your offier. I would be happy to reimburse you for costs for copying and shipping a CD. I spent an hour last night on iTunes listening to some of Cohen's songs and bought "Anthem", sung by Julie Christiansen and Perla Batalla. Gorgeous.

I too would be happy to reimburse you for the cost of a cd. Thanks for the offer.

Sheila - I have a Perla Batalla cd of her covers of Leonard Cohen songs. It's really great. You can find it here:

I also have a Judy Collins cd called "democracy" that is all Cohen songs. I like the Judy Collins CD but The Perla Batalla cd I like even better. Have you listened to Leonard Cohen live in London? There is both a cd and a dvd. I watched it on PBS a few years ago and loved it. Now I might have to buy either the cd or the dvd.

Thank you for the link, Jean. I've always been a Judy Collins fan and even have a few 33 1/3 albums hidden away somewhere. She, Joan Baez and Miriam Makeba are contemporaries and were my favorites. Perla's voice is a perfect match for Cohen's music. Whenever the Leonard Cohen special airs on PBS, I watch.
Thanks again, for the link.

Jean and Shelia,

Would you rather have an SVCD (Super Video CD) or a DVD? They should be equal in quality, and they should play on most players or computers. If you would like to have the music only (without the video), I can also put that on a regular CD, and include it.

And you'll need to PM me your mailing address.
