Hi Karen,

Welcome to our internet family. That's a known issue with budesonide and all other corticosteroids. They increase insulin resistance, thus allowing blood glucose levels to rise.

In fact, another common name for this class of medications is glucocorticoids, so named because of their tendency to adversely affect blood glucose levels. If you are a diabetic, I'm kind of surprised that your doctor did not mention that problem to you.

Again, welcome aboard, and please feel free to ask anything.

Thanks Tex,
The dr. didn't tell me that. It's not surprising.. I'm discouraged with the doctors here.

Welcome to the family Karen . Glad you found the site.
Have you modified your diet? Are you eating fruit? Are you consuming any type of sugars?
What type of diet are you following. Are you taking meds for diabetes? Do you exercise? Sorry to inundate you with questions but it's easier to help our friends here if we have some details to fine tune your diet etc.

Thanks Heady :
I'm taking Onglyza for diabetes, ( DX 2008 ) I was doing well watching my diet & taking medication but sense I've started the Budsonide my glucose is too high! I'm also a chronic pain patient with osteoarthritis, ( caused a herniated disc in my neck with stenosis & bone spurs) Raynauds, RLS ( which is know called Willis-Ekbom ) Neuromas , Plantar Fascitiis , Fibromyalia, diabetic Neuropathy, Diabetic Retinopathy, Highh Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol and Hyperthyroidism. I'm on a lot of medications! Due to my pain I'm unable to exercise regularly ( I swim on my good days ) I am a very " picky " eater & had finally adjusted to a diet ( or food I would eat ) that kept my sugar levels right,, now I guess I'll have to to adjust diet not only due to the Colitis but also the meds !! ( DX in March is year ) & it's so hard , I'm very discouraged !!

Don't be discouraged... Just go back to the basics of eating plain one ingredient foods. Before my elimination diet in April I had already cut out vitamins, caffeine, sugar, fruit, nuts, alcohol. I believe the artificial sweetener I was eating in my treat foods and Splenda in my coffee&on my oatmeal was a large part of what caused my flare! I suggest you consume NO artificial sweetener. When I started elimination diet I cut out gluten, eggs, dairy, soy, fiber, salad, oats, spice. I only ate meat, fish, rice, red potato, sweet potato, carrots, squash, almond milk, rice chex, rice cakes, water. Within 10 days the WD stopped. I have felt great since as long as I stay true to my diet. Sooo.... Chin up..... Be very mindful to eat small amounts frequently.always combine a protein with your carb. keep a diary of your blood sugar readings, times, foods, BMs.
I struggled with PF for 6 mths doing physiotherapy. Do you wear a boot(splint)at night for plantar fasciitis or wear arch supports in shoes. If you have any questions please feel free to ask. There are many experienced wonderful folks here to help in any way possible. Sometimes it takes the brainstorming of many to get you onto a journey of healing and overall wellness. Hang in there. The future got brighter the day you found this site. You can do this. It feels overwhelming to begin with but you will be surprised when you start eliminating trigger foods from your diet how much better you'll feel when your body is not struggling against the diet and inflammation. I suggest you order the book in the upper right hand corner of this site. It is very informative. You also may want to consider having tests done by Enterolab. My best wishes for health. Hugs

Heady,

I have had episodes of low blood sugar all my adult life. When I started having rice chex with almond milk for breakfast I would get light headed a couple of hours later. I kept thinking I was eating protein with it because I had the milk....then I read on the almond milk and realized it doesn't have that much protein. Since then I have been eating turkey sausage or ham scrambled together with some frozen hashbrowns for breakfast. If I have the chex then I will need a snack a couple of hours later.
Welcome to the group Karen.

Hi Karen,

Just to underline the importance of what Heather (Heady) said about artificial sweeteners, most of us here tend to react to them, and artificial sweeteners can cause us to have diarrhea even though we are doing everything else right. IOW, anyone who has MC should totally avoid artificial sweeteners. Some are worse than others (the worst seems to be aspertame), but none of them are totally safe for us.

I had a severe plantar fasciitis problem about 7 or 8 years ago, and I thought that I was going to have to stop working, but as Heather suggested, I started wearing heel supports designed to relieve the problem, and after a few months of daily use, the problem completely resolved.

The inserts I used are no longer listed, but I believe that this is an improved version of what I used:

Please be aware that most autoimmune diseases are connected, and most importantly, they are connected with digestive system issues. And despite what most doctors believe, most AI diseases are caused by certain foods in our diet that trigger the production of antibodies by our immune system. Those antibodies trigger inflammation in various organs in the body, resulting in various autoimmune diseases (depending on our genetics).

After we eliminate all of the problem foods from our diet, and allow time for our gut to heal, most of us find that most of our autoimmune symptoms either diminish, of disappear altogether. IOW, when we change our diet to control our MC symptoms, we are also helping to control all (or most) or our other autoimmune issues as well.

Most of us have other AI issues besides MC, and we have also been discouraged at times, when nothing seemed to help. But the good news is that if we are willing to do what we need to do to make our diet safe, and provided that we are very careful to make sure that we eat a safe diet, we can get our health back, and we can begin to enjoy life again. As another member, Jean, would say, don't look at these diet changes as limitations, or restrictions — look at them as gifts that allow you to regain your health.

No medicine that your doctors can prescribe will come close to providing the health benefits that you can gain by eliminating inflammatory foods from your diet. Drugs can only suppress inflammation. Diet changes can prevent inflammation from developing in the first place, and that is the key to safe, long-term control of AI issues.

This is a very important lesson to be learned. Drugs can lead to short term improvement but for long term remission of symptoms you need to remove all foods that cause inflammation and remove them permanently. After a while this can become pretty easy to do, once you figure out what foods you need to avoid.

Thanks Jean,
I'm so glad I found this support group ! GI doctors just really don't help, mine told me that diet didn't matter?! I knew it had to, it seems common sense to me that it would! Information here will help me out a lot. I'm going to buy the book, I know it'll help too. I'm glad y'all are here to help!!

Karen ...I must add that you should always wear shoes with good support in the house... No bare feet!
If you are in PF foot pain you should also ice footbed 10min on 10min off For an hour every evening to help control the swelling. Also in the morning before you get out of bed, take off splint & stretch foot up toward you, hold 5seconds then relax it repeat 10times. What is your 2hr post meal blood sugar reading?
Keep an eye on your blood sugar levels in your diary, as you change your diet & the inflammation in your body lessons, your medication requirements may need adjusting as your body changes. My post meal blood sugar is right around a 6. I take no meds. I do take vit.D 1000mg 2X day. The great news is that after I eliminated the dairy from my diet my arthritic sore knuckles improved. The arthritis in my spine has also improved. I exercise (pain free)2X daily to help the arthritis & to keep my bowels moving daily. I totally understand your feelings of frustration.... You finally got the diabetes under control & now MC, how much more can I endure. You can get thru this just like you got thru the diabetes food choices. I had never tried veal or lamb till now& both were good. There may be food choices to change that at first don't appeal but after you eat it regularly your taste buds will adjust. Before MC I was a daily pbutter junkie but I'm no longer able to tolerate it so I switched to almond butter. Same thing about the almond milk. I like it better than regular milk now. Hang in there. We are all here for you, cheering for your success! Hugs

Thanks Heady.
I haven't been able to go barefoot in years! It's my Neuromas that cause most of my trouble. I don't have to wear a boot ( My Podiatrist didn't mention a boot) I just keep getting the shots for the neuromas ( ouch ! )
I can only wear Orthoheel brand shoes or the Orthoheel inserts. They are comfortable so I don't mind. I spoke to my Family Physcian today & he wants me to monitor my sugar for a while & try controlling it by diet before adjusting meds. I have many medical conditions & it took years to get my pain under control . I know a lot of my health issues would benefit from a better diet, but trying foods I don't like have only resulted in gagging & I'm unable to eat them!! I'll continue to try for that is all I can do.. It's going to be a long ( not easy ) journey ... I have a supportive family, & now I have this family too!! So glad y'all are here!!!

Karen...My heart aches for you. But there is light ahead. I have private messaged you and you can email me back with your reply.
