I was at a family birthday party not too long ago and didn't have time to bring anything for myself to eat because it was a weekday, after work thing. I figured I'd just eat when I got home. It's awkward sitting at the dinner table while everyone else is eating but I figured the day wasn't about me so I was good with it. It seemed to bother everyone else but me that I wasn't eating. I have a very understanding family and didn't want to hurt feelings but I simply said, I can either eat and make you (all) feel better and be sick later or not eat and be ok. They understood my point and we had a nice time. It's too bad I ran out of time and wasn't as prepared as I should have been but sometimes thats's they way it is.

After years of trying to "fit in" at various dinners, lunches, special occasions, I no longer care if I fit in. A few years ago I sent an e-mail to friends and family, and posted on Facebook (my family made me join LOL) a description of what celiac disease and gluten intolerance are and what gluten does to my body. Gluten is poison and I cannot, under any circumstances, consume it. If some people continue to misunderstand the problem and make cracks about my "fussy" diet, to Hell with them.
People who know me well are used to seeing me pull a few shrimp, a paleo muffin and/or a chocolate chip cookie out of my purse. At a recent university dinner I was the last person served because the kitchen forgot to make the gluten free dinner I requested. If this had happened a few years ago, I would have been embarrassed and annoyed and may have tried to "make do" with a few items on the plate. We learn how to cope with our situation and stop expecting others to really understand.
We all "cheat" or fall off the food wagon once in a while. I have not knowingly eaten gluten since 2011, but I have eaten ice cream and cheese once in a while. If you are willing to accept the consequences, ice cream or parmesan is worth it a few times a year. So, we aren't perfect and we do the best we can.
