Magnesium - cost per type and value for money

Post by Gabes-Apg »

Just did a few calcs to look at 'best bang for your buck' magnesium supplementation

3 types, Oil, Tablet, Powder

Ancient Minerals Magnesium Oil (which has the same levels as the MagSorb Oil I am using available in Australia)
5ml = 560mg of elemental magnesium
the 237ml bottle has a total of 26,544mg of magnesium for $29.00 in the USA (plus postage)
(it is the same cost in Aus for 250ml bottle)

Ethical Nutrients Mega Mag (available in Aus and in USA)
This is MC safe (GF/DF/SF/YF) and does not have potassium
each tablet has 200mg of elemental magnesium
the 120 tablet tub costs $34 so that is 24,000mg of magnesium (** for past two months i have been getting these for 50% off for $18)
tablets are easy to split to take half dose

Orthoplex Mag Opti powder (practitioner only product)
the product I have started using as it has a blend of ingredients to help correct the pyrrole
would only suit C dominate MC'ers
it costs me $37.20 for 7130mg of magnesium

[Using Oil and Tablet for a fair component of my magnesium intake keeps it affordable]

The Oil derma application is best bang for your buck!

The Ethical Nutrients one costs $69 in the US, on ebay. Not available anywhere else.
Beautiful, wonderful Gabes bought me some on a big sale, and, with postage, it's sill half of that.
Waiting to try it!

Gabes, you seem to be an expert on magnesium supplementation. so this question is for you.

I order most of my supplements from iherb, since I'm from Sweden I found them to be the best for me.

Is this a good magnesium product http://www.iherb.com/Kirkman-Labs-Magne ... ules/57460

Seem to work both if you have C or D. What do you think?

Gabes,
While you are answering that question here's another.
This quote from the site....is it true? Those of us with D dominant should be taking oxide?
There are reported differences in how different forms affect the gastrointestinal tract, however. Below are some guidelines, though individual results may vary and should be discussed with your physician before administration:
•Oxide: tends to firm stools
•Glycinate: A very gentle form of magnesium that is easier on the system
•Citrate: tends to loosen stools
•Sulfate:tends to loosen stools
•Chloride:tends to loosen stools

My experience says that this isn't true. I take glycinate. It has never caused any problems. I took oxide once. It sent me straight to the bathroom.

I am just revisiting this discussion, and have some brain cells and energy to focus on this! Apologies for the delay in providing direct response.
I am now a Iherb customer (they had free international shipping in July) and I am now more familiar with their products and range

the kirkman product looks good, albeit it is a bit expensive for how much you get. The product does have a good plus, the advantage of the ease to take a 1 capsule 2-3 times a day and spreading the dosage.
Most other products their capsules have 300mg of elemental magnesium per capsule. which might be a bit much per dose for some MC'ers

Kirkman's magnesium glycinate is what I haven taken for years. I don't think it is expensive compared to other brands of glycinate, only in comparison to other kinds of magnesium, which tend to be considerably less expensive. As I've mentioned before, I take glycinate because other forms of magnesium have caused D for me so for me its worth the added expense.

Jean
thanks for the input, with so many different forms, and each of us reacting differently to Magnesium, it is good to get feedback.

I did some calcs, the kirkman works out 12 cents per 100mg of elemental mag, so 36-48cents per day! not expensive in the scheme of things
the other good quality Mag glycinate on iherb was Pure Encapsulations - 15 cents per 100mg

(**this is based on pricing converted to Aus dollar as I am on an Aus IP address - the pricing may work out cheaper depending on any discounts, bulk ordering you do)

I used to take Pure Encapsulations but the Kirkman's is a little less expensive, but not by much. I take 600 mg a day and Kirkmans's comes out to $.76 and Pure Encapsulations $.83.

Hello!

I have found that Epsom-salt baths works best for me (or foot baths, since I don't have a bath tub).

Twice a week I take foot baths, and in addition I spray magnesium oil (Zechstein) from Ancient Minerals on my tommy each morning after shower.
