Pancreatic Insufficiency Connection?

Post by solisspirit »

Found an interesting article on pancreatic insufficiency and IBD. My first GI mentioned pancreatic insufficiency to me once and I am now wondering if he meant it in connection with IBD rather than chronic pancreatitis. Is it possible he didn't mean chronic pancreatitis but instead meant pancreatic insufficiency due to some IBD? Thoughts?

pancreatic insufficiency is linked to B12 deficiency,
b12 deficiency is very common for all IBD's

Do you have the actual numbers of the results, or did the doctor just say they are ok.

As we have discussed frequently here, the ranges provided as a gauge are very general, the actual number and if it is towards the bottom of the range, and/or there has been a gradual decline over the past year(s) is quite important.

Hi Solis, good to see you back here. I meant to reply to your other post on pancreatitis. I think your doctor is out of bounds for suggesting that, if that what he suggested. On what basis did he mention it? I just find these GIs to be rather flippant with comments like this.

You would be very ill if you had pancreatitis. My BIL has chronic pancreatitis and is in a LOT of pain and is sometimes hospitalized for extended periods when he has a flare up. Mainly that is connected to alcohol use (he has a problem with that).

I wish you well in your MC journey and hope things are going better for you.

Gabes, to answer your question yes i have the results. I read over them all and everything was in range, except my rheumatoid factor which my GP at the time said was really nothing to worry about because it was only slightly off. The fecal fat test is what came back at the GI's office and he's the one that told me he thought it was pancreatic insufficiency. This is still strange to this day considering I've never had pain anywhere or anything. Now he also said all of this based on the fecal fat tests results alone. He hadn't done any scopes or CTs. He's actually the same dr. that ordered me to have a CT and an MRI and the nurse told me she would have to understand why he wanted both and call me back. I think he made a mistake. In any case, I left that GI and went to another one with great reviews, and he only ordered the colonoscopy and endoscopy, which I couldn't get because of insurance issues. That's all changed now and I finally got my insurance to work with me. I'm scheduled for my scopes in a couple of months.

Hi Ukelalelady! He basically said it on the grounds of my fecal fat test. He told me that he only sees those kinds of numbers from people that have been drinking or smoking for twenty years, and looked at me funny, like I do. I don't. I've been known to care more about my health than most people. I don't smoke, never touch alcohol, and as far as blood pressure I'm 114/70, though sometimes my bp does go down to about 100/65. So I have no idea why he would say what he said. He just gave me weird looks and it made me uncomfortable, like I did something wrong. IDK. I couldn't go back to him after that day.

I'm just trying to understand why I don't have pain, blood, and the only real symptoms I have are excessive gas, which smells bad, nervous colon (which is basically when I get nervous I have to run to the bathroom), and fatty stools. The latter didn't begin until about 2 years ago, and since about four months ago I've got gf and have noticed I have it a lot less, but it's still there sometimes. Also, my poop is more solid and less watery. If I have soy or something I'm not supposed to have, I get real gassy and get watery stools. I'm completely lost on what I might have.
