Another Version Upgrade - (Already) <Sigh>

Post by tex »

Ok, believe it or not, I've just upgraded the board to the latest version, (again), in order to address a special problem. It seems that hackers now have ways to fish for passwords, by using dictionaries, and flooding a board with login attempts, until they find one for an existing member, that works.

If you have a password that can be found in a dictionary, then your account would be vulnerable. However, the new upgrade, addresses this problem, by limiting the maximum number of login attempts that can be made in a single session, and, by seting a minimum time interval, during which no login attempts will be accepted for that particular username.

I can set these parameters to any values, so I am open to suggestions, in order to prevent any hardships for any members. Currently, I have the maximum number of login attempts set at five, (5), followed by a 30 minute interval, during which no further log in attempts would be accepted for that particular username.

Now, this does not mean that if you log off, you would not be allowed to immediately log back in. The 30 minute lock-out only applies to username login attempts where the maximum number of unsuccessful attempts was reached, (in this case, 5, with the current settings).

At any rate, we need to select numbers that will not limit legitimate users, but will still thwart hackers, and prevent them from logging on, by stealing and using a legitimate members password.

Also, since I had to make quite a few code changes, in order to install this upgrade, if you find any feature of the board that doesn't seem to be working properly, please let me know.

Thanks,
Wayne

Hi Wayne

Is that why I did not have access a few minutes ago? Was it due to your upgrading? or something that I did?

Yes, I had to disable the board for about 15 minutes to make the changes. Hopefully, that will be all the upgrades for a while.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Love,
Wayne

No problems Wayne. Just making sure that I didn't do anything to cause it.
