My son had an appointment with the PA to the GI today for routine follow up on his liver. He has about a 70% chance of developing UC so I am quite concerned with what he eats. He is- not so much. He gets frequent stomach aches which we attribute to his meds that control his puritis. I've had looming thoughts of it's cause being related to food. I explained my concerns to the PA and asked if the doctor would consider writing the order for the Enterolab test to at least give me peace of mind or provide him with data to help him make an informed choice about what he chooses to eat. She cheerfully said she would write it. Then it was done- just like that! No debating, begging, feeling like I was asked for some voo-do test! Now it can be covered by my insurance!
When I asked for the test myself a few years ago it was a big deal. This time she just gave a disclaimer that the tests weren't always reliable but since I had good luck with it, what could it hurt? I refrained from making any "you are behind the times" comments and decided to just be thankful I will save a few bills in my pocket. Could it be possible the word is getting out? I hope so.

I agree. We talked about the blood tests I've tried along with the Enterolab tests and I gave her my experiences and opinions on them. I have to reconsider my thoughts of totally cutting them out of my progress because if they don't keep hearing it they won't learn they can't ignore it.
It's not often I can say it was a good day at the GI's office!

It's great when they are cooperative. Hope all goes well with the test. One of my fears is that I have passed this disease to my kids (they are in their 40s).

Lucky you! My integrative medicine practice orders all kinds of alternative tests, but not Enterolab. My daughter is going this month to figure out her post-infectious IBS and why she still has daily D. We know she is legume allergic, but something else must also be going on. I'll ask for orders for Enterolab too.

It was nice that the request was granted so easily. I'm not sure if the actual GI would have been as agreeable. He allowed the test for me but never mentioned one word once the results came back. I tend to be extremely critical of them, for good reason, but wanted to give them a thumbs up on this one. It's hard to think of our children deveolping the same condition.
