Advice for someone with shingles
I know this has nothing to do with LC but my daughter has the shingles and this makes the 4rth time in 2 yrs. She just had rotor cuff surgery and she is miserable!!
My question is: how long do you think you would have to wait to have the vaccine after an episode of it. I know it may not keep her from getting them again but maybe cut her risk.
They always say it's from stress, I've advised her to take multi doses of vit d.
Thank you for any help. It stresses me for her.
Thanks,
Connie

Hi Connie,
I wish I knew the answer to your question, but frankly I doubt that anyone (including the developers of the vaccine) have a good understanding of how long one should wait. It probably depends on a number of things that can vary by the individual. One thing she has going for her is the fact that all vaccines work better for younger people than they do for older folks.
Personally, I believe that your suggestion to take vitamin D is the best thing she can do to help prevent a recurrence in the future. Has she ever had her vitamin D level tested? It might be a good idea to do a test immediately (before her 25(OH)D level has time to improve in response to the supplementation), because the result might provide some very helpful insight.
Did her doctor recommend antihistamines as part of the treatment? I would think that mast cells are bound to be a part of the inflammatory process associated with the syndrome, so antihistamines should help. Note that she may have to use more than the labeled dose in order to get relief, though. It's generally safe to use up to 4 times the labeled dose of most OTC antihistamines, if needed (we know that's a safe dose, because allergists regularly prescribe antihistamines at 4x the labeled dose to treat chronic urticaria, and shingles strikes me as being mighty close to chronic urticaria in some (possibly many) ways.

referring to my nutrient bible
shingles - Lysine and E will help
Lysine:
RDA dosage of Lysine is 32mg per kg of body weight
to correct deficiency 800mg-1500mg the max is about 2000mg/day for Female (ie dont go over 2000mg)
(diarrhea is an indicator of too much.)
Vit E
dosage depends on the type of Vit E
for cell, inflammation, skin i would opt for Tocopheryl Phosphate
(if you think your daughter might react to soy, there are SOY FREE Vit E products available)
RDA is 30mg
correct deficiency for female go up to 400mg
in line with tex's suggestion re the Vit D, i would get Vit D3 level tested.

One of my co-workers came down with shingles a few years ago. He looked into getting the vaccine and was told he could not get it until he was at least 60 years old. I don't know if it was his insurance company told him that or his health care provider.
I'm sorry she has shingles. Hope she feels better soon.

Brenda,
It never even occurred to me that there was a minimum age limit for the vaccine, but you're right, the limit was 60. But in March of 2011, the FDA approved the use of Merck's Zostavax shingles vaccine for people 50 and over. It supposedly provides about a 70 % protection rate for the people in the younger group.

MC is a new disease for me but I have had recurring shingles for approx. 15 years. The new challenge is to learn how to eat for shingles and MC. For shingles the strategy is to eat foods low in arginine and high in lysine. Foods high in arginine are coconut, almond, turkey - all good things for MC. I haven't had a shingles outbreak for over a year but now that I am eating foods high in arginine - I just experienced an outbreak. I've just started researching, but I am taking L-Lysine to balance out the foods high in arginine. I think my big trigger is coconut - this is a new daily food for me.

Thanks for sharing that information. The new vaccine is a killed virus, and my GP is pushing it, so I may try it at my next appointment.
