Do you know your inflammation indicators?

Post by wmonique2 »

Hey gang,

I just tested my C-Reactive Protein-- 0.9 (values are 0.0-4.9) which means that I am on the very low end and well within the normal range. I can't remember what it was before when I was first dx'd.

Tex, you want to explain to us what it actually means and what significance does it have?

Thanks,

Monique

Hi Monique,

Well, you've pretty much covered the gist of it. The CRP test result is supposedly an indicator of overall inflammation (for the entire body), and a significantly elevated result is thought to correlate with the presence of a serious disease, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, infection, IBD, etc. Typically though, the CRP won't respond to RA or lupus, for some unknown reason. And on the other hand, it will often give a positive result during the final stages of pregnancy, and in many cases oral contraceptives will cause an elevated result.

Basically, it's just a screening tool for systemic or wide-spread inflammation.

Hi guys,

Had to dig up my bloodwork to reply to this post. A year ago my CRP was 2.4. It's considered normal range but anything above 3 is considered high (according to the test I took).

I've been thinking about getting bloodwork again in the next month or two to check CRP & Vit D, also cholesterol etc... since my diet has changed I'd like to know if my CRP is lower.

Also I've been taking krill oil after reading this blog post which cites some interesting research on the oil's ability to lower CRP.
