Flare from antibiotics...HELP!

Post by dmc »

Thanks to this site - going gluten free and avoiding various other triggers - I have had few issues with my MC for 4yrs. A few weeks ago - without thinking I took amoxicillin for a severe ear infection and immediately had major GI issues. I switched to Cipro but days later was also diagnosed with Shingles and went on Valacyclovir for a week.

I am having uncontrollable GI issues similar to when I was first diagnosed and can't seem to get back on track. I read in a previous forum that people suggest S. Boulardii with antibiotics. Would that benefit me although I've been done with the antibiotics for a week?

I have 4 young kids so this is really hard and would LOVE any suggestions!!
Thank you!

Hi Stacy,

I'm sorry that you had to return after years of remission, but hopefully you can get back on track soon. That was a major series of antibiotics, and the S. Boulardii should have been taken immediately upon completion of each antibiotic regimen, but it still might help.

If your symptoms are especially severe, it might be advisable to ask your doctor to do some cultures to check for a C. diff infection. Sometimes it takes more than one sample (and more than one culture) to detect the infection. Amoxicillin is notorious for causing C. diff infections. Signs of blood in the stool can be a tip-off of a possible C. diff infection. If the symptoms are no worse than your previous MC symptoms though, then C. diff is probably not an issue, because C. diff typically causes very severe symptoms, with lots of painful cramps, etc.

If you can't seem to kick the dysbiosis problem, you might ask your doctor about a round of rifaximin, and then immediately follow it with either VSL#3 or S. boulardii. Cipro would probably also work, because it will usually stop D immediately, but it carries side effect risks that can be serious if you happen to be unlucky enough to be susceptible to them.

Of course you're most welcome. Good luck with this, and please keep us posted.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Boullardi anytime will help.
It can help balance bacteria and yeast.

Hope the gut settles down soon .

Hi Stacy,

I really feel for you since just got through the flare from antibiotics for the ear and sinus infection issue. Probiotics are always a help. Hope things work out real soon for you.

Love, Maggie
