frustrated....MC group on FB is all wrong...

Post by ldubois7 »

I had joined a group on Facebook called My-croscopic colitis. They seem to be all about drugs, and learning to 'live with' this condition, and report that diet has no effect on obtaining remission from MC.

I sited Tex's book for anyone who wanted more information, and got a few positive comments! Yay! I think these poor souls are being lead by doctors that have no idea what this disease is really all about!

I think I will have to delete this group.

I haven't seen that particular group but this doesn't surprise me. I have run into 2 people recently that I work with who have been diagnosed with colitis. When I talked to them about diet changes (as they were eating their peanut butter on english muffin breakfasts ) they looked at me like I was a crazy woman. I'm going to keep talking with them as they both are not currently flaring, but I have a feeling when their symptoms flare up again, they might be more willing to listen to the alternatives.

Changing diet as drastically as we here at Potty People do, is extremely hard and most people simply don't want to do it. It is easier to take a drug and continue with a comfortable diet. My mother had this reaction when she got her results from Enterolab and saw the list of food she would have to eliminate. People don't want to sacrifice and do the hard thing until they are so sick, changing diet is alll that's left. Doctors and their blindness to the necessity of changing diet only make things worse.

I totally agree with you Sheila. Most do not want to put forth the effort. I was the same way until my quality of life literally went down the sh**er.

I've often found people on other sites to be less supportive and more critical without necessarily having reliable answers. The people here are great! It feels like home and you can always ask questions without feeling you may get pounced on.

One of my closest friends (she lives in Israel) has been having D non stop for months. She stopped using cow's milk products, only uses goat's milk products. That was the only real change she made. I nagged and nagged about gluten, but she wouldn't listen.
Recently I got an email "humbly apologizing" She said she went to a new nutritionist who tole her to drop ALL gluten and to scour her kitchen for contaminants. She has a large family who are not going to give up gluten.
Her comment was that when you pay someone to tell you to do what your best friend tells you to you listen, and when it helps you have to humbly apologize.
She won't give up anything else - yet, but gluten is a step in the right direction.

Ugh, it is a terrible group. Should call it the MC Rationalization group. I'm just gonna stick here...

I have found that most people just don't want to change their diet and since that stance is supported by most of the medical profession they believe that there is no reason that they should. I don't really get it. If you are sick, why not give something a shot, especially if it has no nasty side effect. We become so attached to the kinds of foods we eat that giving them up sounds impossible. My favorite food used to be bread fresh from the oven slathered with butter. It still sounds really good to me and I am sure I would enjoy it until I found myself in the bathroom. I am almost certain I will never eat it again. This really is the only place for a person with MC to come if they want support for dietary change rather than simply support for their misery.

And, I got into this MC mess in the first place, in part, by over using ibuprofen. Why would I risk taking another drug, long term, that may have effects on me in the future??? Dah.......
