Colonoscopy preparation

Post by Lilja »

Hello,

I have been called in for a colonoscopy, and enclosed in the letter was a description as to how I should clean-up/empty my stomach.

I looked up in the Medicine Catalogue, and the two suggested products are full of "chemistry" (Citrafleet and PrepPico), and one of them contains lactose.

I take Epsom-baths regularly, and I wonder if I could take Epsom-salt (organic, consisting of magnesium sulphate only, no additives) instead of PrepPico/Citrafleet?

I am so afraid to have a D reaction to a pharmaceutical product, so I wonder if I could go the "natural" way?

Magnesium is said to be extremely laxative, but how much should I take to be sure that the stomach is totally emptied?

Of course, I want to be perfectly emptied

Have any of you tried Epsom-salt instead of pharmaceutical products?

I would be grateful for your points of view!

Whatever you choose just be sure it does a complete job otherwise it's a waste of time and money if the GI can't get a good view of everything. I just had one a few weeks ago and it was noted in the pathology report that the preparation was excellent. It's about time I get a compliment for all the pooping I do!

I have gluten, soy, dairy, and egg issues and did not have a problem with the recommended method of 4 Dolcolax along with the big bottle of MiraLax with clear Gatorade. I've taken a few other prep solutions before and this combination, by far, was the least upsetting.

I don't have any experience with alternate methods since I was always afraid I might have to try again if it wasn't done correctly.

You might want to consider colon hydrotherapy. It worked for me but I only did it 3x and next time I think I would do it 4-5x. The report said my clean out was moderate or medium but they still did the procedure. Not the cheapest way to go, but most pleasant for sure. Good luck!
