paging Polly again!

Post by Alicegf »

Polly,

I'm on day 5 of C, except for the "nuggets" on Tuesday (I think it was). Yesterday I drank 1/2 cup of prune juice, and today another 1/2 cup. I'm afraid to drink more because of the risk of D. What do you think? I'm working on my reply to your p.m.

Anyone else have an opinion?

Thanks!

Hi Alice,

IMO, after 5 days of C, it's very unlikely that your first BM will be a Norman. More likely, it will be a mix of D and C. Hopefully, after that the status will return to normal.

As far as I'm aware, re-hydration is not a normal function of the colon. The only time this occurs is when MC is active in the form of secretory diarrhea (in which case the colon infuses copious amounts of water into the lumen). At all other times (to the best of my knowledge), it will/can only extract water. Therefore, any stool with a C rating currently in residence, will tend to remain in a condition of C. And typically, when the stalemate is ended, it will be flushed out by D.

At least that's the way I see it.

Hi Tex,

Thank you so much for your speedy response! That is very interesting about the C remaining C and in the final emptying it will be D. I didn't know that. That's pretty close to what has happened at least once to me through this month long "complication". A couple weeks ago, I drank 1 cup of prune juice each day for 2 days, and that brought about a episode like you described, but no hard C stools that time. Some close to Normans, but mostly too soft and some not formed. A week or 2 before that, I had an episode almost exactly as you described. Started with hard C formation. I did not drink prune juice prior.

Hi Brenda,

Thanks for the tip. I haven't tried warm prune juice. What would that do?

Over the years, people have told me they will warm the prune juice before they drink it. Sometimes drinking warm water will help me have a bowel movement.

My mother is currently in a skilled care facility. One of their tricks is to mix Mylanta in with warm prune juice.
