What to take for a cold?
Hi, five weeks into LC and now I am getting a sore throat. I used to take zinc for a cold but not sure what is safe to do now. Any thoughts?
Hi,
Zinc should still be safe for you, and my impression is that it works about as well as any other remedies for the common cold. Boosting your vitamin D level will help in the long run.
If taken soon enough (within the first 2 days of the first sign of symptoms), megadoses of vitamin D can have a therapeutic effect against the flu, but I'm not sure if it works as well for the common cold. I've never tried it for that. I have used it to prevent/minimize flu development. But I'm talking about roughly 150,000 IU of vitamin D daily, for several days. A treatment regimen of that level is not to be taken lightly. If I thought that I were coming down with the "bird flu" though, for example, I wouldn't hesitate to take it.
The zinc should help. I've used zinc lozenges before at the first signs of a sore throat, with good results.
Good luck with your treatment.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Another thing that is very good at minimizing the aggravation of a sore throat is to gargle now and then with very warm water (but not so warm as to cause any burns) saturated with salt.
You're very welcome. I hope that your day goes well too, and you can prevent that cold from fully developing.
