Mrs. Columbo - How to Stop Your Computer From Shutting Down

Post by tex »

If you are using a laptop computer with XP, or any other Windows operating system, it is set by default, to shut down when idle.

Here's how to force it to stay on:

Go to Control Panel, and select Power Options. In the window that opens, be sure that the Power Schemes tab is selected, (It should be selected by default). You should see five lines that have arrows on their right end. In the first one, it should say "Portable/Laptop". Click on the arrow to get a drop-down menu, and select "Always On". That will keep it from turning itself off automatically, but be sure that you always have the computer plugged into a power source, because if you don't, when the battery runs down, it won't save your data, (it automatically saves everything before shutting down if it is set to the "Portable/Laptop" option).

In the other four lines, below there, it should say, "Turn Off Monitor", and "Turn off Hard Disks", "System Standby", and "System Hibernates".

Click on each of those arrows, and select "Never". Then click "Ok", at the bottom of the window, to save the settings, and close the Control Panel window. You will probably have to re-boot the computer before the settings take effect.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Luv,
Galahad

Looks like you will be averitable expert by the time you get home Barb. Nothing worse than a computer that wont behave, so frustrating.

Mrs. Gates,

You shouldn't have to change anything on the power options when you get home, but you will have to set up your email client for your Internet Service Provider, (ISP), there, (the way you had it before).

Galahad

P S Great work, by the way. You are fast becoming a computer nerd. Or is it a nerdette?
