Another Clue That IBDs May Be Caused By A Mycobacterium

This is interesting, but alas too much science to read in a foreign language.

My sister is a Celiac, and got home from a vacation in Thailand two years ago, and suddenly got severly ill. She was put in isolate in the hospital while the university hospital cultured the bacteria. They found she had a so called "atypic" /non-typical tuberculosis. It was a rare case that they had not treated before, but reassured us that it was not contagious.

Since then she has been on heavy antibiotics. The medicines are so strong, that the doctors control her vision every month to monitor that she is not going to be blind.

After having read your thread, I come to think of the fact that people who get a Celiac diagnosis in mature age here in Norway are given a vaccination to prevent the developing of a bad mycobacteria-based lung inflammation.

So, I am pretty sure there is a link between mycobacterias (there are 22 in all, typical and non-typical) and inflammatory bowel diseases.

That's very interesting that Norway has a vaccination program for late-presentation celiac disease. Celiac disease is an IBD, so I wonder why they don't offer the vaccines for other IBDs.

I'm afraid Norway has the same misconception as other countries; Celiac is the most known and diagnozed, and therefore gets the most scientific and medical attention and also the most financial resources. IBD is not an illness, just a nuisance.

That's disappointing to hear, Lilja, since most of the cutting edge research on bowel diseases have thus far come from N. European countries.
