Endoscopy, PPIs, Oh My...

Hi everyone. So after being diagnosed with MC a few months back, I was less than pleased with my doctors explanations and ended up getting a second opinion. With the help of this forum, I was able to find a "forum recommended" specialist in my area! (what luck)

On to my question. After bringing him my initial biopsy results, he suspected celiac in conjunction with my MC and recommended another endoscopy (at least it wasn't another colonscopy). Still waiting for the test results, but in the meantime he put me on a dose of pantoprazole (40mg/once a day). Since I know that PPIs are a "no no" with MC, I wanted to reach out.

is it OK to take the meds for three weeks while I wait for my results? Other members have had luck with him (as he is on the forum's. short "recommended" doctors list), but I just wanted to get some thoughts. Thanks everyone!!

Are you actually having any upper digestion symptoms, ie gastric reflux, pain, gas?

When I was recovering from surgery, the doctor on duty insisted that I had to take a PPI while I was still in the hospital. It only took 3 days for me to develop acid reflux problems from it. I had never had acid reflux problems previously at any time in my life, and it took me about 6 months to get rid of the reflux problem after I got out of the hospital (and away from the PPIs). YMMV.

I agree with Tex and Gabes, unless your symptoms are really bad, it's not worth the risk of the PPI. FWIW my reflux went away after a few months of GF/DF/SF/EF diet with limited grains. Pretty much completely gone after 10 years of PPIs <i> and </i> Zantac on top of it. I know some people here take Zantac successfully but it is contraindicated for MC.

Not everyone has that result from removing food intolerances, unfortunately, but it could be worth waiting.

The angled pillow for sleeping at night helps, as well as DGL tablets after meals. But like I said, not everyone has a reversal of reflux. I pray that you will.

Unfortunately due to some reflux and non ulcerative dyspepsia, I have been taking Zantac for years, and only just received MC diagnosis about two months ago. I cannot take PPIs (I guess that is not a bad thing). I was not aware that Zantac was contraindicated for MC. Where does one find this information?

Is the list of recommended docs posted somewhere on the forum? Can it be searched by state/region?

Hi megamoxie, maybe I over-spoke. This is my deduction from what I read on the NIH website that, Zantac and prevacid (and ibuprofen,etc) are "linked" to MC. To my dismay I've been on all that, most recently prevacid when my MC hit.

More importantly, I do think everyone should be aware that Zantac was shown in a medical study as the likely cause of one case of MC. Read this abstract:

Nancy is correct. H2 antihistamines can cause MC in some cases, while in others they may be helpful. For more information on this paradox, please read the short article at the last link in my post at the following link.

Thanks everyone. I just called to get some clarification on why it was prescribed. Apparently, the doctor found some gastritis in my stomach when my endoscopy was done. He did say that there was small chance that take the PPI would make my MC worse, but said that her preferred that I stay on it. I guess for now, I'll be keeping a ridiculously close eye on everything and hope that nothing happens in the three weeks until my follow-up.
