Poop Pills

Sounds easier than transplants!

In the early days just a few years ago when fecal transplants were initially developed, this treatment required hospitalization and invasive procedures such as colonoscopies or throat tubes. Now, a new procedure, devised by Dr. Thomas Louie, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Calgary, makes the process as easy as popping a pill. The process involves taking donor stool usually from a healthy relative and sending it off to a lab to be processed. At the lab, food is removed from the stool, beneficial bacteria is extracted, and it is thoroughly cleaned. It is then packed into triple-coated gel capsules which ensures that they won’t dissolve until they reach the desired destination – in the intestines. “There’s no stool left – just stool bugs. These people are not eating poop,” Dr. Louie said of the treatment - See more at: http://www.thehealthyhomeeconomist.com/ ... GBKvx.dpuf

poop pills later on?

I wonder if it would be best to introduce beneficial bacteria AFTER the elimination all offending foods and getting the inflammation under control and healing underway? Seems like that would be the most opportune time...

Fecal transplants work well for C. diff, but not for IBDs. Unless you have C. diff, there is no point in trying a fecal transplant for MC. Several members here have tried fecal transplants (some, many times) with no benefits that lasted longer than a day or 2. You can search the archives for old posts about the attempts.

A recent medical trial for UC also ended with disappointing results:
Chicago—Fecal transplant has reached a critical milestone: testing in the first randomized controlled trial of the therapy to treat inflammatory bowel disease.

Although this step might be good for science, the news was not quite so encouraging for patients. The treatment did not appear to be better than placebo transplant at alleviating symptoms of ulcerative colitis (UC), according to the researchers.
That quote is from an article in a newspaper for gastroenterologists (Gastroenterology & Endoscopy News).

If you are referring to probiotics, yes, that would be the best plan, because most of us either cannot tolerate probiotics until we are in remission, or they provide no benefits. A handful of members here out of many hundreds claim that they have benefited from a probiotic while they were recovering. But on the other hand, many members have suffered a relapse when they tried a probiotic.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Whoa! Sure does sound easier.

I have a friend in Australia who had a fecal transplant, she was in remission from colon cancer but got some bug and was eating like a horse but couldn't gain any weight on her skinny frame. It did not work for her. I have not heard from her in months, I hope she is ok...
