just be "you"

Post by twirlitgirl »

this is a quote from my sister when I apologized for going to her house and cooking my own meal.
she said " do not think about us around you who can eat whatever we want, think about yourself and eat whatever it is you can, and stay well, so we can enjoy your company and not worry about you. Your food sensitivities are a fact of your life right now and do the best with what you know, but do not apologize for it, we all have room in this world together and those who do not understand that, do not give them any of your valuable time or energy"
I now go into any situation where I find myself in someonelse's home, family , friends, whether it be just a dinner or an overnight and I prepare my meals with a smile and laugh and enjoy everyone's company without the guilt and shame I used to feel. My sister gave me so much hope that day. It turned my attitude around to just be " me" again and all that comes with it. , my food to add to the meal, along with a relaxed sense of humor to be at ease with everyone around me.. no matter what is on their plate. We all have a different path we follow on this journey in life, but eventually to just feel like yourself again, and find peace with that, it is an amazing gift.

In my MC journey, i found my 'true friends' were the ones that
-empathised and supported me with my strict eating plan, (rather than the ones that queried it and gave me lectures about eating fibre)
- the ones that if I was coming over to visit, would wash glasses/plates/cutlery with a new dish cloth to ensure anything i consumed food or drink from was 'Gabe Safe'
- the ones that would see new gluten free products in the shops or specials at the organic shop and text or email me about them

being 'yourself' and being in unconditional okness with our lives as they are, is a huge milestone of the MC journey

hugs that you have wonderful supportive sister - please tell her, she is awesome!

thank you everyone for taking time to write a little note about my sister. I truly am blessed to have her in my life and she will be so touched by the sweet comments about her. I know she will be beaming from ear to ear. Sometimes just one little comment can mean the world to someonelse and she didn't know how much that would mean to me. I am truly blessed to have her in my life and be a part of this fantastic supportive family, here too. I love the story Gabe, of your friends making everything" Gabe Safe," it is just such a little thing for someone to do but it speaks volumes to you and their depth of friendship and caring about you.
hugs to you all and may your days be alot brighter with the loving people you have in your lives as well.
take care, friends.

cheers

It's great to have family and friends who support you in this journey. Your sister's words are so true.

I'm convinced that the only hope I have of controlling this disease is to strictly control what I eat and drink. The health and safety of all of us with this condition (or similar) must take precedence over anyone else's potentially hurt feelings or minor inconvenience.

Hi Megamoxie,
I beleive you are already on your way to getting this under control by that statement, it takes a lot of courage to come to that conclusion and putting your health first. This disease is about listening to your body and doing what works for it to keep you going and functioning , our lives are not defined by food it is defined by how food makes us feel after we have eaten it. I have been in social situations and actually the other night at my choir rehearsal someone brought a gluten free cake to celebrate a member's birthday and a small peice was offered to me, I didn't buckle under the pressure to eat it right there in front of everyone because I knew it was at night around 8pm and not knowing how much sugar was in it, and if it would weigh heavy on my stomach so I was feeling a bit stressed about it, and decided to ask if anyone
had an extra plate so I could wrap it up and bring it home to eat the next day.. In a matter of minutes , my very understanding friend and fellow choir member had taken
the plate of cake, found a plastic cup covered it like a tent and wrapped it in a plastic bag and because of her thoughtfulness I was able to just continue on being happily there with everyone knowing that I would enjoy that dairy, free gluten free cake at home the next day with my dinner when I had time to relax and eat it slowly and judge if I wanted to eat it or not eat it. I took a couple bites the next evening after dinner and that was enough, I didn't need any more than that and it didn't weigh heavy on my stomach that night either, so a horrble situation for me was averted by having such a supportive friend , I was truly touched by her act of kindness and no pressure or
