Question about coconut oil and carageenan

Post by mcnomore »

I've read that coconut oil is healing for colitis and that carrageenan can cause colitis (my nutritionist told me this) -- true or not true?

Well, I don't know if one and definitively say that Carrageenan CAUSES colitis, but it has been shown to be hard on the digestive system. That's why I don't buy ALMOND BREEZE brand almond milk. Coconut oil is very soothing, but again, don't know if it HEALS the gut. I do use it though

In line with Leah's reply, and as per numerous discussions over the years on this forum, no ONE thing causes colitis, namely MC. For most people here there were multiple factors, genetics, medications, illness's in childhood, various emotional and physical stressful events, lifestyle,

As for healing, again based on experience here, no ONE thing has healed the MC, it has taken a combo of inputs, removing all the major triggers, eating the right diet, taking the right supplements, time and patience for healing to occur.
There are quite a few MC'ers that can not tolerate Coconut at all.

the published information that many practitioners follow regarding IBD's, my experience thus far is that it does not work so well for MC. I cant give you scientific reason why.
My nutritionist has been very interested in the learnings of this group and is applying quite a few of those learnings to other patients to help them heal their gut, as our learnings make more sense and work!

Thanks for the feedback. I suspect my nutritionist meant diarrhea rather than colitis, but who knows.

I had never heard of carragenan, until I read this post, and found that carrageenan is E407, an additive used in food as a thickener. I also found this article http://www.cornucopia.org/carrageenan-2013/

I'm grateful that I came across this discussion.

Translated from a norwegian article:" The problem with carragenan is that what is called "broken down carragenan" makes wounds in the gastrointestinal tract in laboratory animals, can harm the fetus and is probably also carcinogenic. Broken down carragenan should not be used in food. The ordinary (original) carragenan might be digested in our gastrointestinal tract, but FAO/WHO experts were in year 2000 still not sure wether it was harmful and carcinogenic"

Now I have even more reasons to read all labels carefully!

Lilja
that is why in the early stages, it is best to try and have well cooked, home made meals, protein and well cooked veges, as much as possible.
(avoid pre cooked/pre prepared processed flours type foods as much as possible)

I frequently have recooked vegetables with poached eggs for breakfast!
