Metanx and Itchy Blisters on Feet

Post by Summer S »

Hi All,

I went to a Neurologist for my peripheral neuropathy in both feet. Probably idiopathic but they did the electrical and needle tests, which were pretty uncomfortable and brought tears to my eyes, and are sending me for tests at Sonora Quest:
Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate
CRP
Complete thyroid panel
Vitamin B12 and Folate
Methylmalonic Acide and homocysteine
Yo antibody Titer
Anti Hu Antiboy Titer

The doc said PN pain can be controlled with pharmaceuticals but he appreciates if patients want to try other naturopathic remedies. I asked about Metanx, Tex, he never heard of it. When I was with the gal doing the electrical testing I said I've heard PN can be caused by gluten sensitivity. She had heard about that, but has not heard of Metanx either. The doc did give me a prescription for Metanx even though he's never heard of it. Doctors are funny creatures. I'll get it but won't take it until after I do the other tests.

Somebody here had mentioned itchy bumps on scalp, can't remember where I saw it. I get a type of dermatitis on my feet that is itchy bumps/blisters. Before my 2 months of D and then LC diagnosis I would get one or two little blisters or patches at a time. Now I've got 8 patches! Has anybody experienced anything like this?

Thanks,

Summer

Summer,

Hmmmmm. That's kind of odd that they had never heard of it. Of course it's primarily prescribed for the peripheral neuropathy associated with diabetes, so maybe they don't treat diabetics.

I'm not sure that Metanx addresses any pain issues, but it might. It primarily helps sense of touch, reflexes, balance, gait, brain fog, etc.

Back when I was reacting, I had boils turn up at various locations on my body, but I don't recall any on my feet. It kind of sounds as though what you are describing might be dermatitis herpetiformis (a skin reaction to gluten).

I did occasionally experience an odd neurological phenomenon where standing with the soles of my feet in contact with a cool or cold porcelain bathtub while running barely warm (not hot) water into the tub (so that the tops of my feet were in warm water), would cause the soles of my feet to literally feel as if they were on fire. It felt like standing on hot coals. I had to reach down and feel of the water and the tub with my hands, to confirm what was happening, because it was so unbelievable.

Hi Tex,

I can't imagine a neurologist not treating a diabetic with PN.

If it doesn't help with the pain and I am stuck with PN for no apparent reason, help with touch, reflexes, balance, gait, brain fog, etc. would be good.

That feet on fire in warmish water is weird. I wondered what the test where the doc put a cold tool on my leg and it felt warm, but on my foot it felt cold. Something along those lines?

Thanks,

Summer

Right. Apparently the signals get crossed/corrupted somewhere along the line.

That symptom has never returned, since I've been taking the Metanx. I've been taking it for a little over 5 years now.
