Gday Tex
hope all is well in rural Fort Worth area.

warning- strange Gabes question/pondering

in the past week i recall that you posted about the origin of Vit D supplements being from Lanolin (am I remembering this correctly?)
in the period that I stopped Vit D supplementation, and took high levels of magnesium the other thing I was doing was using lots of lanolin on my arms, legs, face etc. Lanolin is one of the cheapest soy free moisturisers.
Would my body be making Vit D from the lanolin? and hence why my Vit D level went up even though i was not taking Vit D Supp?

one thing I found was that a thick application on my face was actually better than sunscreen - would this be right? would it be protecting the skin or would it be increasing UV amounts absorbed?

That is an incredibly perceptive observation, and I'll bet a GF cookie that your guess is right on target. Here's what I said in that post:
In our body, vitamin D is made by chemical reactions which result from the exposure of a form of cholesterol (7-dehydrocholesterol) in our skin, to sunlight (specifically, to ultraviolet B light).

Lanolin is a natural source of concentrated 7-dehydrocholesterol. When it is irradiated using UVB lamps, it creates a chemical process nearly identical to the conversion that takes place in human skin. So the answer to your question is that supplemental vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is manufactured by the irradiation of 7-dehydrocholesterol from lanolin.

In view of that information, I would surmise that what you suspect is exactly what may have happened. Lanolin applied to the skin may be a way to supercharge vitamin D production (because of the fact that the 7-dehydrocholesterol in lanolin is more concentrated than the natural form that we produce in our own body). If irradiation of lanolin in a laboratory setting can produce vitamin D, then irradiation by the sun (on our skin) should certainly be capable of the same end result.

Obviously I can only guess at the answer to that question also (since no "official" relevant medical research exists), but I would think that the lanolin absorbs the UVB radiation and uses up most of it's energy to produce vitamin D, so that leaves little UVB energy available to burn the skin.

I didn't cover the production of commercial vitamin D in the book (it never crossed my mind, or I might have included it), but if you would like a copy, just PM or email me to let me know whether you would like a digital ebook version, or a PDF file that can be read on a PC, using Adobe Reader or some other PDF reader, or both. If you want a digital book version, please tell me what type of digital reader you have, because they all seem to use different file formats.

Tex
thanks for the prompt reply and for sharing your insight and knowledge.

I might start bulk buying lanolin!!

- for the supercharged Vit D3 via the skin it is cheaper than lingual Vit D3!

- using it as 'sunscreen' per say, it handles sweat/humidity better, has no chemicals, alcohols or other skin irritants.

my next pondering, i wonder how much cell health / any deficiencies have on the lanolin via the skin as a supercharged Vit D provider.

Makes me want to move to Australia where they have lots of sun and sheep!

Seriously, what is the purest form of lanolin and where can we get it? I used a version of processed lanolin in soap making, but I don't think that's what you're talking about. I seem to remember that some people have a sensitivity to it.

As to the sun, I load up on skin contact during the 3, maybe 4 months that it is strong enough in central NY state. I was never attracted to the "snow bird" concept of living in Florida during the winter, but it's starting to appeal!

I had a look - there is pure lanolin on iherb and amazon. good pricing considering it is MC safe, natural, and has multiple benefits

on iherb, the now foods tub of lanolin works out cheaper than the product I am currently purcashing, so I will be getting some on my next iHerb order.

PS - no sun today, Spring storms have set in for a few days. Wicked lightening shows!

We had similar weather for a few days here, but the sun is finally shining today (except that these are fall storms here in the northern hemisphere).

iHerb is my favourite place - products are 60% cheaper than Aus,
I placed the order Friday Australian time , paid $9 for DHL delivery, delivered to my door in Aus today!

for Australian suppliers, I pay $9 for delivery and it can take 2 weeks to get to me!

the other thing I like about IHerb is the product info! first website to have consistent information about what products do and do not contain... Shame the pharmaceutical industry was not as good!

OK, I got my lanolin today and it smells weird. Is that normal (I know it's from sheep's wool)...or is it spoiled/rancid?

I put some on my hands and after is soaked in it doesn't smell so much. Also it is an incredibly soft feeling unlike anything I have ever put on my hands!

The lanolin I use is more expensive but has no smell or taste. I buy it in the baby bottle section at my grocery store or Wal Mart. It is by Lansinoh and sold there for nursing mothers to put on their nipples! Says it is the world's purest lanolin - safe for mom and baby 100% natural- preservative free. It is 1.41 oz and I pay almost $10.00 but for me it lasts at least a couple of years. I use it on my lips and cuticles. Great stuff! I learned about it at a dental conference. The oral pathologist showed a photo of a girl with the worst chapped lips ever and then an after photo after this lanolin and no chapped lips.
