Fascinating article in the NY Times.
Excerpt:
Armin Alaedini, an immunologist now at Columbia University, found that antibodies directed at gliadin, a gluten protein, could cross-react with proteins in the brain. The finding suggests that, by some coincidence, certain proteins on neurons structurally resemble proteins in wheat. Meaning that, if your immune system attacks gluten, it might also inadvertently pursue brain tissue.
This discovery has helped revive an old idea about schizophrenia. Might an immune reaction to wheat contribute in some cases? In 2011, Johns Hopkins University scientists found that nearly one-quarter of serum samples from some 1,400 schizophrenia patients had anti-gliadin antibodies, compared with just 3 percent of healthy controls. Of the subset with those antibodies, one-fifth also had those antibodies to transglutaminase 6 linked with neurological dysfunction, compared with 6 percent of healthy controls.

The other link to this is leaky gut, toxins /metals are not cleared from the gut properly and end up via leaky gut in the blood stream and then the toxins/metals 'hang out' in the brain. (reason for brain fog, headaches, depression/anxiety, etc etc)
for those with Methylation issues (MTHFR Pyrrole) the cells are not equipped with the right nutrients/minerals to clear these metals from the brain.
(Things like Pyrrole gene mutation were found when psychiatrists were trying to figure out why medications were not working for schizophrenia. )
This is why alot of the depression/anxiety medications do not work for 10-20% of the population, the medication makes the toxin/metal toxicity in the brain worse.
(when the solution is change diet, fix the gut, get the right supps to clear the toxins/metals)
While ever people keep eating processed, high carb, high sugar, high fat foods, ignore IBS/IBD symptoms, the process of leaky gut, increased toxins/metals, increasing levels in the brain will continue to happen.
This is also why even if you dont have the celiac gene, gluten is a high inflammatory food that does cause damage to the gut, for those with other health issues, consuming gluten will increase the risk of neurological / nervous system issues.

Hopeful,
That article presents the information as if it's a new/recent concept, but Dr. Hadjivassiliou (in England) is a pioneer in this field of research, and he was publishing research articles on the neurological effects of gluten over 12 years ago. Unfortunately most neurologists still continue to ignore it, but hopefully they will update their training procedures and become aware of this information within the next decade or 2. You might be interested in this article as background information:
Gluten sensitivity as a neurological illness
Thanks for the link.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
