Are sudden cravings warning signs?

Post by fatbuster205 »

Hi Guys,
Back in flare up and on 9mg budesonide for 2.5 weeks and while I have improved from Bristol Stool Chart 6-7s to 4-6 I am still going (today) 9 times! Plus today I had to go home from work because of RHS pain (midway) - in the past that has meant impaction but no evidence of that considering! I was in pain and very nauseous! It has settled now! Then it occurred to me, I introduced soy yoghurt into my diet about 3 weeks ago and I have been craving Chinese food - went to my local and asked for gluten and dairy free! Now I am in full flare up! I know the answer - I am intolerant to soy! Well there's a surprise LOL!!!!! (Don't worry I can hear the trans-Atlantic/pacific groans at my stupidity!!!!)

My question is, do cravings indicate an issue? I mean, if we suddenly crave something, have it and then get a reaction ... Get me?
B*********d at the moment but still maintaining humour!

And on that note - true life story - my friend told me of when her mum went to her GP for a 9:30am appointment! Another woman arrived and was insistent that she had a 9:30am appointment! When the receptionist said that she didn't have an appointment, the woman responded, "But I made it with the Optician himself!" The Optician's was next door!!! It made me laugh!!!!

Well craving chocolate is an indicator of magnesium deficiency.....

for those with candida issues, there is a constant craving for sugar.
so maybe cravings can be two fold a. identifying a deficiency and b. the body craving something it shouldnt have..

makes it pretty hard to decode the messages our body sends us!

very funny about the optician!!

Thanks Gabes! I love time differences!!!!
It is a blinder really and I so hope someone can give me a guide as to what do I do next? I have suggested that I stop eating to my doctors - not least to give my gut a rest! But they are not too keen on that idea and frankly I would struggle to work let alone function if I fasted! I guess I just have to see if the half day rest and early night with having a very plain and light diet this evening (GF DF Couscous) will at least get me back to just a lot of *hitting!
That would be more tolerable than that RHS pain! It bowls me every time! Still have a sense of humour!!!

Anne
what has worked for me is sticking to the bland, well cooked, low inflammation, small number of ingredient eating plan. not for weeks, for months... (actually years!) Overcome the mental urge to have something different or new, let our bodies heal, let the gut rebuild.
rather than try new foods, look to slowly introduce key supplements/minerals that will help a multitude of issues common amongst the group.
Zinc - will help gut, cell health, balance histamine, clear toxins, gum/tooth issues,
Vit C - will help cell health, balance histamine, clear toxins, help adrenals/immune
Mag - will help cell health, balance histamine, clear toxins, help adrenals/immune
S Boullardi - helped my gut alot

the diet only got my gut healing so far... it was not until I balanced the histamines and fixed some of the nutrient/mineral deficiencies that my gut really improved.

most of all, hang in there, be prepared for the long haul..

Hi Anne,

Sorry to hear about the flare, but at least you appear to have figured out the likely cause promptly.

I've heard the saying that we crave the foods that we can't have. In the case of gluten and casein, it's actually true because of the gluteomorphins and casomorphins that behave similar to opiates in the brain pleasure centers. I don't know if that applies to soy though. Maybe you just miss yoghurt and Chinese food.

I've heard of a few allergy specialists treating patients who come to them with suspected food sensitivities by asking them to list their favorite foods, and then recommending that they avoid those foods for a week before testing them one at a time, to find the ones causing the problem.

I hope that you will be able to recover quickly. I agree that eating plainly for a day or so should help. When I was still recovering and had a serious setback, chicken soup was usually my meal of choice (morning, noon, and night ).

All my life I craved something sweet prior to meal time. But I always (as young as I can remember) ate my meal first. After meal was over, I didn't have any cravings. So consequently, I rarely ate sweets - probably once every couple of months or more. Even now that I am GF and DF, I don't crave those items. Maybe someone who has had those issues will chime in here.

BTW, I also love your optician story !

Before DX we would go to the local Chinese restaurant often. Huge buffet, small price, what's not to love. Recently a friend wanted to go there and suggested it would be ok if I didn't put additional soy sauce on it :-). My DH asked if Chinese food had soy :-). The fun we have with this MC.

Thanks guys! After a pretty rough day yesterday, things seem to have finally calmed down today and I so hope that it stays that way! I am being very strict with reading every label and am actively looking out for soy which I really do think has caused this latest flare! The Doctor I spoke to yesterday (not my usual GP) told me "food does not normally play a role in IBDs!!!" Arghhh!

Anne,

I'm glad you're feeling better. Notice how much faster you tracked down that food sensitivity (with the help of your body) than the usual long drawn out testing process required by medical protocol. One of the reasons why you were able to figure it out so quickly is because you are open-minded and willing to recognize that food sensitivities play a major role in MC.

One has to wonder how on earth the brain functions (or doesn't function ) in doctors such as the one you spoke with yesterday. In making a statement such as that, they're implying that they actually believe that there's a logical reason why food couldn't affect a disease of the digestive system.

Patient: Doctor, what on earth could that reason be, because it appears to me that food sensitivities might be one of the first things to consider?

Doctor: Well, it's because . . . um, well, there has to be a reason. Let's see now, it couldn't be because food never contacts the digestive system, because that happens all day long, every day. Hmmmmmm . . . there has to be a reason, because everybody knows it's true. I'll have to look it up and get back to you.
