One more thing that my new naturopath suggested was a probiotic, bacillus coagulans. From reading past posts, I see somewhat mixed results for probiotics in general. Is this just something so individual you have to try it?
If so, how long would you wait after a flare-up to introduce anything new?

Bacillus Coagulans, used to be called Lactobacillus Sporogenes. It is a spore-forming lactic acid producing bacteria. It has become popular in recent years because its spore-forming ability makes it more resistant to stomach acid and gives it a significantly longer shelf-life. That said, the literature is unclear as to whether it is better than any of the other more fragile lactic acid producers found in most probiotics. I suspect that your naturopath is recommending it's use because it is more likely to get where it is needed. I am a big fan of probiotic use, but I usually wait until more pressing issues are addressed before recommending them to a client. I do use them with MC/IBD clients. Dysbiosis, whether an initial causative factor, the result of the diarrhea, or from medication use, is very common in IBD. I usually use B. coagulans in conjunction with other lactic acid producers. That is just my preference. If the diarrhea etc. has settled down, I would give them a try. Just start slowly.

Thank you, Dr. Ann! That explanation really helps. Fortunately, my naturopath does seem to recognize the need for taking things slowly.
I last had D in a flare-up last Sunday night, and because I was traveling, I took Imodium, which plugged me up for a few days. Now, a week later, I am pretty much back to what is normal for me, with just a bit of lingering pain, nausea and fatigue. I should have my Enterolab results in a few weeks, but until I do, I'm staying in my known safe zone for foods and supplements, and I will (knowingly) introduce new items only on Thursdays/Fridays so I have a period of mostly down time over the weekends to assess the impacts. The exception is the addition of foods that are a combination of safe foods, or in a slightly different form (e.g. nut butter of a nut that I can safely eat, enhanced applesauce containing other safe fruits, soup of safe veggies, etc.).
